Bowl Expertise Showdown: Geeves VS SMan
Time for a proper update, now that we've got a decent chunk of bowls under our belt. Since SMan was the only foe to accept my incredibly lame challenge, we have some quality mano-a-mano (whatever that means) action going on here. Prior to tonight's return to multiple-bowl-per-night goodness, let's see where the duel stands a mere nine thirty-fifths of the way through. To the Jump!
Total Picks: 9
Total correct: 5
Total points: 86
Standing in group: T-31st (out of 143)
Best pick: Assigning 32 confidence points to BYU's shellacking of UTEP
Worst Pick: Giving 16 confidence points to Hawaii, not realizing that Tulsa's bad defensive stats were mostly from getting shellacked back in September.
Overall: Can't complain, but I'll need a shocker or two to make some headway.
SMan - (the amateur - I mean he IS just a commenter...right?)
Total Picks - 9
Total correct: 5
Total points: 82
Standing in group(were he in it): T-37th
Best pick: 60 of his 82 points came from correctly picking Air Force and San Diego State as winners
Worst Pick: Hard to say - all of his incorrect picks have been 20-something point picks.
Overall: Steady competition thusfar, the expert and amateur status may yet flip.
We're pretty even thusfar, as you can see. However, I am giving myself the slight edge, since I am four points ahead to date and my four incorrect picks have only cost me 36 points, compared to the 86 points he has lost on his mistakes.
Coming up: Five bowls today and tomorrow. I have 94 points riding on OK State, Maryland, WVU, Baylor and Mizzou. Sman also picked the Terps, Mountaineers and Cowboys, as well as Iowa and Illinois for a total of 68 points. We both have no clue about the Baylor-Illinois game - I've got three points riding on a Bears win and an Illini win gets him four - but who does? Meanwhile, I am 22 points confident that Mizzou earns a W, while he placed 17 points in Ricki Stanzi's unsuspended hands.
Here we go!

wow
Geeves- I never thought I owuld get this kind of ink(or typing).. This has just turned pretty cool…
huge win
for Washington last nite, who you have geeves? Looks like it might come down to some of the BCS games
meh
i got crushed by nebraska not bothering to show up, but somehow moved UP to 23rd place in the group. 167 points with 9 of 18 picks correct.
You sir, on the other hand, are bleeding points. Even with a Huskies win last night, you’re 4-7 on games you assigned more than 15 points.
meh
its all bologne- if only we could go back in time and see who would really show up in some of these games….anyway happy new year and i’ll see ya back tomm for 6 more.—-northwestern kicks off at noon, set ur alarm
well now
i may not win the group, but I can officially declare victory against you, SMan.
Of the 28 completed games, you may have one more correct pick (13 to 12), but I am way ahead on points (287 to 167). That means that even if you get all 7 of your remaining picks correct, I will still finish 18 points ahead of you.
Today was a brutal day for you, my friend – your overconfidence in the Big 10 bit you in the cojones. Their 0-5 performance today cost you 120 points, and your one good call (the “Oklahoma Gimme”) only netted you 11. I incorrectly picked WIS and PSU but only lost 18 points in the process, while still clearing 110 points on the other four games. Send me my winnings! As soon as you hit the lotto.
btw
your current point total dropped you all the way to 138th place (out of 145 teams earning points) and I am now 39th
OUCH!!!!!
GEEVES TAKE IT EASY ON ME….Yes new years day was brutal and my confidence in the big 10 was a huge mistake. congrats on the victory and if I win the mega millions I’ll make a donation to the hustle belt. Motivation plays a big role in these bowl games and with the coaching changes who know.
Anyway congrats on the victory and maybe we does this again for march madness and I can have a shot at redemption. Here’s to rootin for the redhawks in the final game for the MAC.
what do you think
of Haywood ? is it over for Rich rod? who does pitt go after? Do you like the Treadwell move? along with Addazio for Temple?
let's see
in order…
haywood – great coach, possibly a questionable person? i assume nothing until a man is convicted, but I’m certain that Miami is thrilled they aren’t dealing with this. that said, he may wait til next year to get a new job. i don’t think anyone is firing just to bring in haywood.
treadwell – seems like a reasonable move. miami’s limitation has been their offense for some time. haywood hit the reset button on the talent and now treadwell gets to handle the offense. he clearly struggled against a good alabama defense, but nobody in the MAC is close to that good defensively
addazio – meh. why not, he probably wasn’t going to stay at UF with meyer gone, and temple had a hole that needed filled. probably a race between treadwell and addazio to see who gets hired away next.
richrod should never have been hired at michigan. i think he’s a much better OC than head coach. i’ll save judgement on richrod unless he either a) doesnt fire greg robinson as DC or b) does fire him and brings in someone equally inept. your defense doesnt get that bad just from being young.
pitt – quick black eye not withstanding, they get another chance. holgorsen was probably the best fit and they may regret him heading to rival WVU, but now they can hopefully hire the guy that was really the #2 choice to begin with – Todd Graham from Tulsa.
