MAC Pick'em Week 13: The End Of The Lightning Round
Well, the lightning round has claimed yet another victim. Actually, Week 12 took two. WMUpilot did not pick AT ALL, and bull_trojan missed the NIU-BSU game, costing him 4 points (but not the 3 point bonus as it was more my fault that the post was not updated for everyone to see). However, all things balance out, as Week 12 produced the highest point total ever in a week, as 2 people went perfect. 18 points is our new 1-week record, and it produces our co-winners (neither hit Buffalo as the high). Congrats to............OHBCats and Brown and Gold. I think you stole my picks, but whatever.
Here are the updated totals to date, (UPDATE) with correct names:

We look at the last week of the regular season, a 2-pt week, below the jump
TUESDAY
Miami @ Ohio - What could've been the MAC East Title Game (had Kent State also beaten Temple later in the week), is now just the "early" game. Ohio will be playing for 9-3, and momentum heading into the MAC Championship Game. Miami is playing for 5-7. Advantage Ohio.
FRIDAY, OH BLACK FRIDAY
Eastern Michigan @ Northern Illinois - This game will be at 11 am, 10 am Dekalb time, after Thanksgiving. Eastern needs to win this game to become bowl eligible. NIU needs to win to win the MAC West. If they slip up, the door is WIDE open for Toledo. This game won the coveted "ESPN coverage", getting to be on the "U". I think NIU clinches behind Chandler Harnish in his final game in the "Wind Tunnel".
Kent State @ Temple - As much as I would love to pick Kent State to win this game, I can't. Temple is a good team, and is playing for a good bowl game. Kent State is denied bowl eligibility, as Bernard Pierce runs all over the Golden Flashes.
Bowling Green @ Buffalo - Eh, a toss-up. After Buffalo's beat-down over Akron, it is tempting to pick the Bulls. However, I can't do it. I think Schilz and Co get it down.
Akron @ Western Michigan - If Western doesn't blow out the Zips on Senior Day, I honestly don't think the Broncos deserve a bowl bid. They should do as expected however and look good for the first time since the Bowling Green game, and get a bowl bid.
Toledo @ Ball State - If Eastern can pull the upset in the early game, then Toledo has the chance to win the West in Muncie. Either way, I think Terrance Owens has proven himself a good QB lately, and Bernard Reedy has proven himself a FAST guy.
High-Low:
High: Western Michigan (they better be in the running at least, or else)
Low: Akron (why not)

pickamajigger - mad crazy final week points surge?
#9 Miami @#1 Ohio – This will likely be closer than the fans want it to be, partly because Miami is figuring things out on offense, and partly because Ohio has nothing to play for. Possibly close enough that Miami can sneak by the way Buffalo did.
#5 Eastern Michigan @ #2 Northern Illinois – NIU sucks at defending the run. Running the ball is the one thing EMU has done fairly consistently. Sooooo NIU just barely loses.
#8 Kent State @ #4 Temple -Not gonna win the pick-em, might as well choose the team with momentum on their side as my upset this week..
- Bowling Green @ #11 Buffalo – Using that same momentum argument, I shall pick Buffalo to sneak past the Falcons in the game – and subsequently in my final power rankings.
- Akron @ #7 Western Michigan – WMU wins. Yawn.
#3 Toledo @ #6 Ball State -BSU’s only chance is a shootout. Toledo has already shown they can win those kinds of games. Too bad it won’t get them to the title game.
High-Low:
High: Miami
Low: Temple. F%$k it. why not.
You do realize that with your picks, Toledo would be in the title game, right?

I'm not sure I'm following your logic
But I like it

my power rankings
say what they say. my picks are different because i might as well take a lot of risks to try and shoot up the standings, regardless of what happens in the real world if i get all my picks right. it aint gotta be logical, chief, its a fake game.
Ohio over Miami: Ohio may not really have anything to play for but they are a really good team that will be up for this game and ome away with the win.
Northern Illinois over Eastern Michigan: the win over NIU is the one thing keeping me from going insane this off-season. NIU is just too good and will roll into the MAC championship game
Temple over Kent State: playing for bowl postioning here Temple is able to get by Kent State and keep them from bowl elgiblilty.
Buffalo over BGSU: Buffalo at home here and feeling good after last week. BGSU day-dreaming about what almost was after their start this year
Western Michigan over Akron: Western will come out angry and absolutly destroy an Akron team that is pretty bad
Ball State over Toledo: as impressive as Toledo has been, Ball State has one more game of Wenning magic left in them at home this year
High: Western
Low: Akron
One more chance....
Ohio over Miami – I’ve always loved the muck Fiami thing – hilarious….
EMU over NIU – yes of course it is unlikely, but I haven’t seen the Eagles play a clean game yet – now would be a good time. NIU still doesn’t have much of a defense. Even with a win, no bowl this year for EMU – save it for next year.
Temple over Kent State – Temple will run, run and run.
Buffalo over Bowling Green – picking the home team
Western Michigan over Akron – big win for the Broncos hopefully gets them a bowl game
Toledo over Ball State – Rockets can win on the road, and Wenning’s magic runs out.
This scenario – BSU and EMU get bowl eligible but stay home. Sad face.
High Western Michigan
Low: Akron
Guess I'll pick this time..
Miami @ Ohio – Ohio has something to play for and is better anyway (although I guess the rivalry factor gives the RedHawks some motivation).
Eastern Michigan @ Northern Illinois – I think EMU is somewhat of a paper tiger (which infuriates me considering we lost to them), and I don’t think this game will be particularly close.
Kent State @ Temple – KSU’s 4 game winning streak makes me want to pick them. But going on the road to Temple is tough.
Bowling Green @ Buffalo – An entirely meaningless game. Guess I’ll go with the home team.
Akron @ Western Michigan – This had better be a blowout. The more I read about the bowl situation, the more I like our chances to get something. Emerald Bowl against the Pac-12 would be intriguing.
Toledo @ Ball State – The Rocket offense is rolling. I think BSU can make this a game, but I don’t think they’ll quite keep up.
OH GOD IT'S ALMOST OVER
OHIO over Miami. Meaningless tune-up game, sure. But the Bobcats are also playing for an “outright” East division.
NIU over EMU. Can’t justify Ron English getting to 7 wins. Nope. I think we’re all a little relieved they got to .500, and they’ve already climbed a mountain. NIU oughta be able to keep the running back in front of ’em and make Gillett pass, which has yielded inconsistent outcomes.
KSU over Temple. Goin’ blind on this one, but the Flashes stay on a roll. Defense on defense. I’ll even give ya a score: Kent State 10, Temple 6.
BGSU over Buffalo. Please for the love of mercy no turnovers.
WMU over Akron. The explanation: WMU is expected to bring their entire roster into the stadium and nobody has vertigo.
Toledo over BSU. This oughta be the best game. Score goes in the mid 30s for both teams, and Eric Page gets another punt return TD.
High: WMU
Low: Temple

Lets finish strong...
OHIO Over Fiami – Its hate week in Southeast OHIO, and I think (hope) the ‘Cats are ready to bring it. Trash talk aside, both teams have good total offenses: OHIO’s is good through the air and on the ground while the RedHawks are only good through the air (as befitting their name). The forecast is for lots and lots of rain, which makes me think that the team that can run the ball wins. That being said, this game could easily grab us: both teams have “nothing to play for”, and none of the current players have ever known defeat to the preppy-bastards from Oxford. That, combined with the projected weather and a probable dearth of students in attendance (the dorms close for winter break at 5 or 6 PM today) all point toward a quiet stadium and possibly (but hopefully not a flat game/team). But its not like Fiami has anything to play for either, other than to send their seniors off once having beaten the BOBCATS. I think we win this one. If we have to win it by 1 point at the last second I’ll take it, but I’d rather win it big, early. Either way GO BOBCATS, lets add another win to the streak against fiami [knocks on wood]
Games on black friday are always a crapshoot, so lets crapshoot away:
Northern Illinois over Eastern Michigan – Its been a great year for EMU, a huge turnaround from years past, and if they win this game they’re bowl eligible (whether or not they have a bowl to go to) but…its not going to happen. EMU is better, but not strong. NIU is good, but not flawless (hello defense?!?). When you add the pieces up, I think that NIU’s high powered offense (think the second half of that Ball State game) + the “big picture” implications of this game (an NIU loss opens the MACC door to Toledo should they beat Ball State) – their defense’s weaknesses (think the first half of that Ball State game) = NIU victory.
Kent State over Temple – Its probably going to bite me in the ass, but I’m picking the upset here! Win and Kent is bowl eligible, lose and they’ve got a soso 5-7 season. Temple’s preseason playmaker (Pierce) is banged up and possibly still suffering from a hammie and/or concussion that plagued him going into and coming out of the OHIO game, respectively. Their freshman phenom (Coyer) looks good and dangerous, he can run and is easier the best passer that the Olws have (not that its saying a lot). That being said, Kent has had a good defense all year (kept the ‘Cats bottled up, thats for sure) and their offense has improved of late. If they find a way to contain Coyer (much easier if you’re not selling out against Pierce) then the Flashes can win this one in what i’m expecting to be a more-empty-than-normal LInc.
Bowling Green over Buffalo – Another game with nothing much to play for. Sure, its senior day at UB, but I don’t put a lot of stock in that, not on the day after thanksgiving. Bad bad day to host a football game, especially in terms of student support. It might not affect a gigantic program like Texas, but it will Buffalo. BG is a team we beat by 1, UB a team we (OHIO) lost to by 1. That said, I think BG has the stronger team (though UB’s little running back, Oliver Twist, is quite dangerous). Contain Oliver and BG wins, which I think THEY think they’ll be able to do and will want to prove that they can do, after losing to us at time expired last week. (Although it has to be said that UB is coming off their highest scoring game since they were D-II)
Western Michigan over Akron – Does it need to be said? Akron is on the road, winless against I-A competition, hasn’t shown much fight in ANY MAC game this season any game except their narrow PAT-chasing loss to CMU. WMU wins this one with a thanksgiving-dinner sized overload on points.
Toledo @ Ball State – Another big potential upset: ball state feels like they should have beat NIU last week and that they got hosed. They come out playing with a chip on their shoulder hoping to impress a bowl selection committee. It doesn’t help. Ball state demonstrated an ability to out score NIU and contain their D last week…in the first half. I think Toledo (with a healthy Toledo crowd in Muncie Indiana) comes to play.
High-Low:
High: NIU in a shoot-out…well, run-out
Low: Akron (because its akron)
These picks mean I’m predicting…OHIO versus Northern Illinois in Detroit on December 2nd. See you there.
Cunning strategery - picking same as me, intentional or not
Now I can’t gain ground.

Last week, gunning for Geeves
OHIO – Miami’s season is over… and it doesn’t really matter because, well, it is Miami. But then again, it is Ohio. Eh, Solich is my man.
Northern Illinois – Unfortunately NIU is no longer playing on Tuesdays, because that seemed to be the secret weapon for the season. Can’t believe that they are going to let the conference title slip away as Eastern has been slipping itself.
Temple – Because Kent State still has that air thing going on.
Buffalo - BGSU seems to keep killing my pics. But Buffalo seems to be able to get it together, just not close. When you go against another non-closer, anything can happen. That is why the Buffs are going to pull this one out.
Western Michigan – If Akron wins now, I would seriously have to consider having a lobotomy.
Ball State – I want to say Toledo, only because I think they will want to take this to end the season on the best note possible and give a bowl a reason to take a chance on them. But I think the letdown after the NIU win earlier in the day will be too much. Ball State takes advantage.
High: Temple
Low: Miami
It's not MAC season till you watch it from Ohio
even tho I’m skipping the luxuries of UB stadium for heat and the same internet broadcast I’ve watched all year.
Pre-Turkey: Location Los Angeles, CA
Miami @ Ohio – O – H – I – O idk against everyone except for mighty Buffalo, they look like the most complete team in the MAC
Post-Turkey: Location Cleveland, OH
Eastern Michigan @ Northern Illinois – I hate these games really MAC, if we’re good we don’t get xmas cause we’re playing late december bowl games so why can’t we have thanksgiving. The EMU’s will be having lamp heated prime rib from the noob chefs who couldnt get thanksgiving off at some holiday inn in the greater chicago area…and no one to take their anger out on but the defenseless huskies.
Kent State @ Temple – Same deal and some crappier hotel in Philadelphia, bright side for Temple, no Big East invite means another year of being the best MAC team never to win the MAC (ITS A CONSPIRACY)
Bowling Green @ Buffalo – See now if u cant get Turkey, you might as well have some Buffalo Wings… BGSU will have greasy saucy hands and turn the ball over 4 times and miss at least 2 field goals…. Apparently we’re amazing at home.
Akron @ Western Michigan – Akron is sucking for Luck, and by Luck I mean Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Good time to do some more recruiting in Indiana who needs a gameplan when you let Buffalo do what we did to them….Akron spends Friday shopping.
Toledo @ Ball State – More of a wish than a pick, see I hate you Toledo and don’t want you in my MAC championship…we all know Ball State couldn’t keep Buffalo from winning the MAC (see 2008) but I’m hoping they have enough belly fire to keep Toledo from winning it.
High-Low:
High: Eastern Michigan Polytech U
Low: Bowling Green State University of Ohio
Kent State, Temple, Akron too, they can't do it like we do.
Falcons, Bobcats and Redhawks talk a lot can't back it up.
