The This NCAA championship for CMU has been a great one so far. The three seeded wrestlers they had in the tourney are advancing. Ben Bennett (174 lbs.), Scotti Sentes (133 lbs.), and Jarod Trice (heavyweight and has a career record of 75-20) all won the first round games of the NCAA tourney. The only CMU wrestler not to win was Donny Corbie (149), who is competing in a consolation bracket from now on.
Scotti Sentes, the eleven seed, faced a tough matchup in West Virginia's Nathan Pennesi. With a two takedowns in the first and third periods, Sentes won easily, 7-0.
Ben Bennett, the six seed, faced the formidable Alex Caruso from Rutgers. The majority of Bennett's points came in the second period, where he was able to use a multitude of moves to pull out to a 5-0 lead. Bennett ultimately won on an 8-0 decision.
Finally, the heavyweight 2-seed Jarod Trice was able to move on to the next round with a quick 3-1 decision, getting a victory over Josh Wine of VMI.
Since Corbie lost, I don't feel a need to explain that.
Bennett, Sentes, and Trice will be advancing into the championship bracket.
Second Round matchups:
- Scotti Sentes will face Tony Ramos (Iowa)
- Ben Bennett will face Curran Jacobs (Michigan State)
- Jarod Trice will face Ricardo Alcala (Indiana)
- And Donnie Corbie will face either Ryan Medved (Gardner-Webb) or Matt Lester (Oklahoma) in the first round of the consolation bracket.
