This is the one we've been waiting for. Coming out of a bye week, Eastern Michigan's depth chart lists Tyler Benz at starting quarterback, with three-year starter Alex Gillett as the backup. Mark Iannotti is third string.
Gillett played two snaps against Michigan State, both QB keepers, with Tyler Benz doing the rest. He did decently enough, but his lack of turnovers certainly gave coach Ron English enough comfort to start him against Kent State. Gillett may get some playing time, but it may not be much. We'll see.
First, the Rockets defense improves thanks to good health on the depth chart. Then this happens. Fatinikun suffered a lower leg injury in the WMU game and coach Matt Campbell said it's probably severe enough that he'll miss the rest of the year, ending his college career, per the Toledo Blade.
Fatinikun was third team All-MAC last year, so this is a sizable loss. Fellow D-lineman Danny Farr is trying to come back from an injury as well so that may be his replacement. Otherwise, line depth could be an issue next week against CMU, a team with perhaps the best O-line in the MAC.
