Buffalo has a winning streak!

With a 29-24 win over Western Michigan, the Bulls have won two games in a row! I know! The last time they did that was ... the end of the 2009 season. (Yikes.)

But Buffalo is a tough team, and we've said this all week. They don't close games entirely well but they might've been the best damn 2-7 team in the land. Now they're one of the better 3-7 teams out there, thanks to Joe Licata, who got the start over Alex Zordich, and a good game out of Devin Campbell, who ran for over 100 yards.

Alex Carder returned for the Broncos, but the rust showed as he threw four interceptions, including one on the first play of their last drive. Cortney Lester corralled in three interceptions on the day.

Again: DON'T SLEEP ON BUFFALO. Also Western Michigan can't go to a bowl game as they are now 4-7 on the year.

UMass Gets Their First FBS Victory vs. Akron, 22-14

Umass_gene_kranz_medium

Ya did it, Minutemen. That was a wholly ugly game but your punting unit kept pinning the Zips deep, and a self-immolation by the Akron offense in the first half really set things up for ya.

Against all odds, you guys finally got a win in Football Bowl Subdivision. You're one of us. There will be better wins in the coming years, wins against better teams ... wins in which you earned it 100 percent, not because the other team just kinda farted around.

CMU escapes Ypsilanti with 34-31 victory

Also, Alex Gillett began quarterbacking the Eagles in the second half, and nobody's entirely sure why. Tyler Benz looked OK on the sidelines and the decision looked good as Gillett scrambled 50 yards for a touchdown to open the third quarter, but that 11-point lead was whittled away by the Chippewas. Zurlon Tipton ran for a score, Kavon Frazier ran back a pick-six and Andrew Flory caught his second TD of the game to give the Chips a 10-point lead.

Gillett finished with some gaudy numbers: 14 carries, 163 yards and two touchdowns. But the passing, not so good: 6-for-16, 71 yards, TD, INT.

Tipton ran 21 times for 109 yards and Flory finished with 9 catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Radcliff was an efficient 20-for-34 for 287 yards, two touchdowns and zero sacks or interceptions. Another testament to that O-Line.

CMU can still become bowl eligible as they improve to 4-6, and the hurtin' continues for the Eagles, who drop to 1-9.

Kent State is 9-1. Kent State is 9-1. KENT STATE IS 9-1

The more I type it, the more sense it might make.

Nope. Kent State is 9-1 after topping Miami 48-32.

Miami narrowed the lead somewhat in the second half but it was a comfortable finish for the visitors. Dri Archer got his third touchdown of the game, this time as a receiver, and Freddy Cortez drilled two field goals with a long of 48 yards.

Needing to play catch-up all game, Zac Dysert finished above the 400-yard mark and stopped throwing interceptions. Andy Cruse caught two touchdowns in the second half and Dawan Scott hauled one in late in the game but there was never a realistic chance to rally and win the game.

Kent State. Bowling Green. Next Saturday. You may want to tune into that one.

UMass has their first FBS halftime lead

A score of 15-0 at half is kind of weird, unless it's tennis. UMass had various leads against Ohio but not at halftime, nor did they have one more than seven points. UMass is enjoying their "best" game of the year, although they're mostly just capitalizing on Akron mistakes. The Zips have thrown three interceptions and had a blocked punt.

The Minutemen have sunk three short field goals thanks to Blake Lucas and Mike Wegzyn connected with Alan Williams for a nice 24-yard play action pass touchdown.

Could this be it? Could UMass get a conference victory? Stay tuned, because I can't look away either!

Kent State rolling over Miami (OH) at half 35-10

Hoping for a good game? Hope harder. It'll take a huge comeback by the RedHawks, and with that Golden Flashes defense, I don't see it happening.

Kent State has already totaled 301 yards on the ground, over 100 each by Dri Archer and Trayion Durham. Both running backs also have two rushing touchdowns. Spencer Keith even scrambled in from 28 yards out, if that explains what is going on here.

Kent State's only uncharacteristic mark is two interceptions by Keith, and he's usually good at managing the game better. Zac Dysert is making some good passes downfield, and there are NFL scouts in attendance to see if he's Sunday-worthy. He's 16-for-25 for 203 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, but his O-Line is giving him no help as he's been sacked three times. Also, one of those interceptions was just a tremendous play by defensive end Mark Fackler.

Yes, that's EMU with a halftime lead, 14-10

A few weeks ago I lamented that while Alex Gillett is no longer the starting quarterback, he is the starting holder. So EMU called in the fake field goal and Gillett ran it in for a touchdown. Good things come to those who wait. Gillett also has two catches for 12 yards, so he's still doing that for them. Eastern scored 19 seconds into the game by route of a Tyler Benz to Tyreese Russell pass.

CMU had all the points in the second quarter, with Ryan Radcliff finding Andrew Flory in the end zone and David Harman knocking down a 23-yard field goal. Flory has four catches for 45 yards.
