Two more games kicked off at 3:30 and have reached halftime. Analysis:
NORTHERN ILLINOIS 10, IOWA 6 — Very glad you weren't looking for points. Jordan Lynch has moved the ball, which is what you want to see in Game 1 of the post-Harnish era. Given the score and how both teams are playing, it's safe to say that NIU is in "hold on" mode, but they have a great chance of winning this and preserving The Longest Winning Streak In FBS. (Ten.)
FLORIDA 14, BOWLING GREEN 7 — The Gators looked abysmal in the first quarter, and Matt Schilz orchestrated an outstanding 12-play, 89-yard drive, including this ridiculous push into the end zone to help John Pettigrew take the lead. But Schilz was also very accurate and involved everybody on the drive.
The Falcons defense has understandably given up some big plays to those speed backs, but after that offensive drive, BG could only muster 11 yards and no first downs on their next three possessions. Gack. I don't like the way the second half will go, but at least the Gators were given a bit of scare, and it's well worth the price of admission.
BG did have a neat drive, only to smash the goalpost on a 31-yarder to end the half. That should be worth more points.
