Illinois State Dominates Eastern Michigan, But It Wasn't An Upset

Stay connected for news and updates

Well, I can't say I'm shocked (since I did call the upset) but I am a bit surprised at how Illinois State dominated pretty much everything except the second quarter. But all the credit goes to the Missouri Valley contender for never giving up, especially after a questionable fourth down call and allowing 14 unanswered points.

But EMU played sloppy. They fumbled it twice and Alex Gillett looked a bit questionable with one bad interception, a second that was tipped, and a third that was Hail Mary'd to the end zone in the final seconds. ISU quarterback Matt Brown had no problem finding open guys and his wide receivers made excellent, sound catches all day. They earned the win, and while they tacked on a touchdown in the final minutes, even after the score was decided, it was essentially that much of a blowout in the spirit of the game. It may be an upset because the FCS beat the FBS, but it didn't feel like one, and you'd think Eastern Michigan was the one ranked in the FCS poll.

So suddenly Eastern Michigan is in trouble. They are now 0-2 and have several holes in their defense that didn't exist last year. They also departed from their standard power running game, or at least didn't do it very well, leaving Gillett to have to improvise, and he's not some wizard out there.

As for Illinois State ... hey, you want to join the MAC?
