The Zips haven't beaten BGSU women's basketball in quite some time, but with a much-improved team, they look to break that chain of unfortunate events.

Akron Beats Bowling Green In Thriller

The Akron Zips women's basketball team won Thursday night with defense in the second half.

"As a coaching staff we decided to change it up a little bit and we became a bit more aggressive." Akron head coach Jodi Kest said about her team's defensive mentality at the end of their 68-63 victory over Bowling Green.

It was her program's third win against the Bowling Green Falcons in almost thirty five years, and the first in almost 12 years.

The Zips forced the Falcons to eat up much of their shot clock, and in the waning seconds haul up bad shots that had little to no chance of scoring. At times it seemed that Bowling Green was confused as to how to break the Zips pressure.

Bowling Green's freshman guard Bailey Cairnduff did a good job weaving her way into the paint and knocking down a couple fade aways that Akron had little chance of defending. However, the team from Northwest Ohio could not rely on that type of scoring to keep them in the game.

And though this game will be remembered for its last ten minutes, the entire contest was a battle.

While the Zips led most of the back half of the second, Bowling Green maintained a lead for most of the game. BG came out and created a 10-2 advantage for themselves, however it was their own defensive tactics that caused the Zips to slow down their offense instead of speed it up--something that had caused the Zips to become disoriented and led to turnovers.

"I thought BG did a great job of controlling the tempo..." Said Kest "...and I also think that we did a pretty good job of our half court execution."

Kest knew that she had to find ways to get the ball to Hanna Luburgh. Luburgh scored 25 points and picked up 15 rebounds in rout to her first double-double in her Akron career.

"We wanted to make sure to draw plays to get Hanna Luburgh involved. She had the hot hand so you have give it to her sometimes." Kest admitted after the game.

Luburgh scored eleven points in the last ten minutes of the game, and was a big factor in the win.

Akron left the door open multiple times however at the free throw line. Rachel Tecca had four opportunities to really seal the deal at the end of the game, but failed to do so from the line. This allowed Bowling Green to hit a three and foul that cut their deficit to one possession. Regardless, Tecca stepped to the line again and this time knocked down both of her freebies to crush any hopes that the BG faithful had.

Bowling Green will go back home to next play Central Michigan Saturday. Akron stays home and will host Buffalo.

Akron Zips 68, Bowling Green 63

That's your final, the Akron Zips takes the game in a thriller and improves their overall series record to 3-47.

Who says the MAC is not full of Parity.

I'm going to the presser, I'll be back in a few to recap.

Alexis Rogers Fouls Out, Zips up by Six

Title says it all

One Minute To Play

Akron has the lead, but can they hold it?

Akron 62 , Bowling Green 60

Officials have nothing to do with it tonight.

I have never been shy to admit my Akron bias, but I can put conflict of interest aside.

I don't have to right now.

Bowling Green has been called for nine fouls, because they have committed nine fouls. Akron has three fouls on them, because Akron has committed three fouls.

The BG faithful that has made the trip may give a Bronx cheer, but the fact of the matter is that these officials have been great tonight.

Akron has a Three point lead

This place is ever much a small Thursday night basketball crowd can explode.

Akron has taken a three point lead after Rachel Tecca performed a behind the back layup that sent shock waves through James A. Rhodes Arena. Akron has played the better basketball this half and the score indicates it.

I'm not falling asleep on BG just yet however. Akron's defense has been tough on them.

Akron 48, Bowling Green 45. Under seven to play.

Akron Took the Lead!!!...For Like Five Seconds

But still, we have a great game on our hands!

Akron and Bowling Green are fighting tooth and nail for everything tonight, and if the coaches can avoid getting T's that would hurt their respective sides that would be great too.

I was completely wrong about the talent differential that I thought BG had over Akron. BG may have more depth, but when its best five vs. best five it is about even.

Bowling Green 43, Akron 42

Akron has Cut the lead to Three

BG stormed out of the locker room, but has faltered in the latter half of the first four minutes.

Akron on the other hand has scored six points off short jumpers and has actually cut the deficit they stared with.

Bowling Green 41, Akron 38

Akron, Bowling Green prepare for intense 2nd half

This has not been as much of a blowout that I thought it would.

Akron has Sloooowwwwed the game down, and have actually been able to play basketball with the Falcons through the first 20 minutes.

The teams have combined for ten for 19 thus far from the three point line. Bowling Green has knocked down six of them, and has gotten significantly better looks. But Akron has shooters, and when they get hot it is tough to stop them.

Rachel Tecca, Sina King and Hanna Luburgh came up with eight points in the first half for the Zips. BG has been anchored by two players, Alexis Rogers and Chrissy Steffen. Rogers has nine points, while Steffen has 13 total.

Once again, these coaches were jawing at the officials going into the locker room . Perhaps I am missing something, but I really think they have been pretty good.

Prepare for a great second half. I have a feeling this one could come down to the team that has the ball last just like in 2011.

Bowling Green Leads Akron, barley

These two teams are putting on a show from the three point line so far.

With the score 33-30 BG, both teams have combined for ten of 17. Bowling Green has hit six of them, while UA has come up with four of their own.

On an off note, both coaches are very upset with the officiating tonight...however I am not seeing it. Not at all. this group has been very good so far. If they continue the way they have I for one will not have a problem.

Bowling Green 23, Akron 17

Bowling Green is simply the better basketball team. It will be tough to argue the other way around.

However, that does not mean that UA can not stay in this one. BG has started to miss some looks, which has kept the Zips in it. They are still down by six however, and BG will have the ball after the under eight timeout.

Bowling Green up 10-4

I simply do not understand the up-tempo that the Akron Zips demand to play. They have gotten very few open looks, on the other end BG has dropped two threes to extend their two point lead to eight--now at six.

Sure Bowling Green's defense has had something to do with it, but Akron is more prone to turn the ball over than get an open look.

Both of their baskets so far has come via set pieces and running their offense.

On the flip side, BG has crisp passing and has played smart basketball which has landed them opening looks and they have been able to knock them down.

Bowling Green vs. Akron,

Akron is on a three game loosing streak, BG is not.

UA needs to at least be competitve if they wish to have any respect in the Mid-American Conference.

I'm court side, and will blog the action as it happens in front of me right here on HustleBelt.
