Two Men Arrested, Charged In Murder of EMU WR Demarius Reed

EMU junior wide receiver Demarius Reed was found dead early in the morning on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 in an off-campus apartment in Ypsilanti, Mich., the victim of what police are investigating as a homicide. As details have emerged from the investigation, two suspects have been arrested and charged in the case. Apparently police believe Reed may have been targeted for his clothes.

2 Arrested, Charged In Demarius Reed Murder Case

Two men, both 20-years old, have been arrested and charged with murder and robbery in the ongoing investigation of the death of Eastern Michigan receiver Demarius Reed, per MLive.com.

The names of the two men have been released: Ed Thomas and Kristopher Pratt. Thomas is facing charges in open murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Records also show that Pratt is charged with open murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Records show that Thomas is being held in Washtenaw County Jail and Pratt is held at Wayne County Jail.

There are no state records showing that they have served any previous prison or probation sentences.

Robbery Possible Motive In Demarius Reed Homicide

According to reports from MLive.com, police are listing robbery as a possible motive behind the homicide of Eastern Michigan junior wide receiver Demarius Reed, 20, that occurred early Friday morning.

Reed's roommate found him dead, with multiple gunshot wounds, at approximately 7:15 a.m. in the hallway of their apartment complex located on the 700 block of West Clark Road in Ypsilanti, Mich.. Police announced Friday afternoon that a gunshot wound was believed to be the cause of Reed's death. An autopsy has been completed according to MLive.com, but Ypsilanti police said the medical examiner's report wouldn't be available for some time.

No suspects have been arrested yet in the ongoing joint investigation being conducted by the Ypsilanti police and the Eastern Michigan University campus police.

Reed, native of Chicago and a junior on the team, had caught 15 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown in six starts this season. He was the team's fourth leading receiver.

The Eagles' 1 p.m. home game vs. Ohio University is still scheduled to take place tomorrow at Rynearson Stadium.

EMU's Athletic Department Releases Statement

Friday afternoon the Eastern Michigan athletic department released an official statement on the tragic death of junior wide receiver Demarius Reed. Reed was found dead Friday morning in an off-campus apartment building, the victim of what police are investigating as a homicide.

Through an official release provided by the EMU athletic department, saying, "the Eastern Michigan University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is extending its deepest condolences to the family, friends and teammates following the passing of (Chicago, Ill.-Simeon Academy), a junior student-athlete on the football team.Eastern Michigan." In the statement the athletic department also confirmed that Saturday's home game vs. Ohio University is still scheduled to take place at 1 p.m.

EMU's Director of Athletics Heather Lyke issued condolences to Reed's family:

The EMU family has suffered an unbelievable loss today. Demarius was an influential leader who thrived in the classroom and on the field. Everyone gravitated to him and often described him as the 'life of the locker room.' Our hearts go out to Demarius' family. We are doing all we can to help and support them along with the rest of our student-athletes.

Eastern Michigan president Susan Martin also issued a statement:

We are all deeply saddened by the tragic news this morning involving Eastern Michigan University student Demarius Reed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and his teammates on the football team. As we reported earlier, Demarius, a 20-year old junior majoring in Communication, Media and Theatre Arts and a member of the football team, was the victim of an apparent homicide that was discovered at 7:15 this morning at an off campus location in the 700 block of West Clark Rd., near the intersection of LeForge Rd. and Clark Rd. The circumstances involving his death remain under investigation at this time by the Ypsilanti Police Department. The EMU Police Department is in close contact with Ypsilanti Police and we will provide additional information as we learn additional details.

Counseling is available for students and others in the EMU family who may want those services. You can contact Counseling and Psychological Services at 734-487-1118. The offices are located at 313 Snow Health Center. Counselors recommend that those interested call ahead before stopping in.

A dedicated website has been established to provide the latest updates about the situation as well as information about counseling services. We will have a community forum at 5 p.m. this afternoon in the EMU Student Center Auditorium, in which EMU Police Chief Bob Heighes and I will offer an update on the situation and be available to answer any questions from our campus community.

Earlier this morning Eastern Michigan University released a statement to faculty, staff and students confirming that the victim of an apparent off-campus homicide is in fact Eagles' junior wide receiver Demarius Reed.

Here is the full statement:

Eastern Michigan University has confirmed with the Ypsilanti Police Department that the victim involved in the homicide investigation reported in the timely warning earlier today is Eastern Michigan University student Demarius Reed. He is a student athlete on the football team. As was reported earlier, the incident happened off campus in the 700 block of West Clark Rd., near the intersection of LeForge Rd. and Clark Rd. It was discovered at 7:15 this morning. Ypsilanti Police are investigating the death and are in close contact with the EMU Police Department. As soon as we learn additional information, we will share it with you. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the Ypsilanti Police Department at 734.483.9510.
