Any hopes of seeing a showdown between a pair of ranked opponents this Wednesday have crashed and burned. The latest USA Today Coaches and AP polls are out, and despite an impressive 20-point victory on national TV, Ball State isn't ranked in either. Even worse, Northern Illinois somehow managed to slip a spot in the Coaches Poll this week despite not playing and a slew of losses from other ranked teams.
The Huskies come in at No. 21 in this weeks Coaches Poll, down from 20 a week ago. This is bad news, as now both Louisville (No. 13) and Central Florida (No. 19) are ahead of the Huskies. The Coaches Poll is one of the polls used to determine the BCS Standings, which will be updated tonight, so if the Huskies are getting passed by its fair to say the odds of either of those teams coming in above NIU in the BCS standings have increased.
Also of concern, Fresno State, Northern Illinois' non-AG rival in the BCS rankings race, jumped up three spots in the Coaches Poll this week and now sits at No. 14. This could go a long way in helping the Bulldogs gain some ground on NIU in the BCS rankings tonight.
Luckily for NIU, it gets a home game vs. Ball State Wednesday night on national TV to hopefully woe the voters back on its side of things.
Here's a look at the full USA Today Coaches Poll:
|RANK||TEAM||RECORD||POINTS||FIRST PLACE VOTES||PREVIOUS RANK||CHANGE||HI/LOW|
Schools Dropped Out: No. 23 Texas Tech, No. 25 Notre Dame.
Others Receiving Votes: Georgia 44; Nebraska 43; Ball State 22; Duke 22; Virginia Tech 15; Louisiana-Lafayette 7; Mississippi 6; Cincinnati 6; Southern California 6; Texas Tech 5; Washington 5; Arizona 4; Notre Dame 2; Buffalo 1.
Here's a look at the meaningless AP Poll, in which the Huskies actually managed to move up two spots despite not playing this week. When they win, AP voters vote them down. When they sit at home and watch other teams play, AP voters vote the Huskies up. Makes perfect sense.
|2||Florida State (3)||9-0||1,418||3|
|Others Receiving Votes: Mississippi 68, Minnesota 60, Nebraska 16, Duke 11, USC 10, Washington 9, Ball State 7, Virginia Tech 5, Brigham Young 3, Notre Dame 2, Houston 1|
