For the first time in the history of the Mid-Major College Football Top 10 Poll we have a new No. 1, sort of. With dropping down to just six voters this week, the No. 1 spot resulted in a tie between Fresno State and Northern Illinois. The Huskies have been closing in on Fresno State since the beginning of the poll, but finally tied the Bulldogs on the eve of NIU's big matchup with now No. 3 Ball State.
The Cardinals previously held the No. 3 spot for several weeks before being passed by BYU a few weeks back. After dismantling CMU on ESPN2 this past week, and the BYU Cougars falling to Wisconsin on Saturday, the two teams have flopped places on the poll. East Carolina rounds out the Top 5, up one spot from a week ago, and thus breaking the No. 6 curse.
Buffalo moves up a spot to No. 6 after defeating Ohio, thus knocking the Bobcats from the poll entirely. Boise State was a victim of its bye-week, falling two spots and proving out-of-sight out-of-mind is a real issue. Toledo and Louisiana-Lafayette each move up, tying for No. 8 on the poll. No. 10 goes to North Texas, which just missed the cut a week ago.
With No. 1 NIU and No. 3 Ball State and No. 6 Buffalo and No. 8 Toledo facing off this week, we're sure to see some serious movement in the poll next week.
