Be careful what you wish for Mac supporters. Since NIU's assent to the edge of BCS glory last season MAC fans have been decrying the unfair assault on this conference. Herbstreet, Palmer and the like called into question the quality of this conference, it's teams and it's schedule. "Just give us a chance! Look what we did to Penn st., Kansas, Connecticut and Iowa!". 2012 was a glorious season. Enter the 2013 campaign. The season to put up or shut up. The results of this year are in. And to paraphrase the 4th best Go-go's song ever - Our lips are sealed. Mac fans have disappeared from message boards. What we staunchly defended so loudly and proudly we know just take the criticism with a hmmph. And rightfully so.
0-5 this bowl season. And its not just the zero wins that are a problem. It was the fact that NIU, Ball state and Bowling green, our 3 best teams, were the highest ranked MAC teams competing against lesser ranked teams from supposedly equal or lessor conferences. 12-1 NIU vs 8-5 Utah st., 10-3 Bowling green vs 6-6 Pittsburgh and 10-3 Ball state vs 8-5 Arkansas state. All losers. That roughly tells me a 10 win MAC team is about equal to a 8 win Sun belt or MWC team. We can sneak up on some teams every now and then and get that "bone" victory but it's fair to say our best teams are probably .500 in the B1G. Maybe. And while we never said we were equal to the B1G, deep down we did think we were comparable outside of their top 2. Probably not so much.
Does this mean I no longer love the MAC? Absolutely not. It's still some of the most enjoyable, fun and frenetic football in college. Next season I will be glued to espn3 on saturdays and espn2 wednesday nights to support the Huskies and all MAC football. What it does mean is it's time to temper some hopes and enjoy the MAC for what it is. Mid-Mid major football. Right now we're closer to being Conference USA than the MWC. And that's fine. It was that way before 2012 and it will be fine in 2014. We'll just blame it all on Jordan Lynch. The MAC messiah and false profit. And still my all time favorite college athlete.
