Syracuse Knocks WMU Out of the Big Dance

Western Michigan run in the big dance ended before it ever started. The Broncos were pummeled right out of the gates Thursday afternoon, eventually falling to Syracuse 77-53. The loss makes it two-straight losses in the NCAA Tournament for the MAC, and officially ends the season for the MAC's top 4 teams. Interesting fact...since 2004 the MAC (excluding Ohio) is now 0-8 in the NCAA Tournament.

Broncos Ousted From NCAA Tournament By Syracuse

The Broncos committed turnover after turnover during a disaster of a first half, went to halftime down by 19, and could never recover. WMU ends the season as MAC champions but with a bitter disappointment in the NCAA Tournament.

FINAL: Syracuse 77, Western Michigan 53

Well, that was brutal.

The Western Michigan Broncos 2014 NCAA Tournament run was over before it ever started. The Broncos were slaughtered by the Syracuse Orange 77 to 53 and have been eliminated from the tournament.

In the pre-game run-up to tip off CBS did a live look in on the locker room where WMU head coach Steve Hawkins was ripping his team about not thinking they had a chance to win. He brought up Facebook & Twitter messages his team was receiving about win, lose or draw, already having achieved a great season. Hawkins was pissed, telling his team they needed to believe they could win to stand a chance. It appears his fears were right. The Broncos looked defeated just a few minutes into the contest.

The Broncos seemed scared to drive to the lane, instead settling for deep 3s that rarely fell. Meanwhile Syracuse was attacking offensively, turning 1 WMU first half turnovers into a 19-point lead at halftime.

(First half box score)

The second half didn't get much better, though WMU didn't clamp down on the ball and stop coughing it up. The Broncos weren't helped by the fact that David Brown spent the majority of the second half in pain. He was visibly limping up and down the court, clearly just playing for pride at that point.

It was an all-out terrible performance from everyone on the roster not named Tucker Haymond. WMU was just out of its league against a team that started the season 25-0.

This also marks the second straight season, and third time in four seasons, that the MAC's lone representative in the NCAA Tournament was blown out in their first game. In 2013 Akron was blown out by VCU, 88-42. In 2011 Akron also lost as the MAC's lone representative to Notre Dame, 69-58.

With WMU's loss the top 4 teams in the MAC from this season are all done for the year. WMU was the MAC Champion. Toledo, co-regular season champs and MAC Tourney runner up, lost in the first round of the NIT Wednesday night. Akron, the No. 4 seed in the MAC Tournament lost to IPFW in the first round of the CIT Wednesday night and Buffalo, the MAC East champs and the No. 3 seed in the MAC Tournament, didn't accept a post-season bid.

How Did WMU Get Here?

Does WMU Stand A Chance vs. Syracuse?

Do the Broncos stand a chance against Syracuse's 2-3 zone? Or are the Orange ripe for an upset?

Continue Gives WMU 11% Chance To Beat Syracuse, the new venture by stats guru Nate Silver and ESPN launched today and to kick off his more sports-centric statistical takes Silver's new site decided to use their algorithms to predict the NCAA Tournament.

The Western Michigan Broncos, a 14-seed in the Tournament, has an 11 percent chance to beat Syracuse in Round 2 on Thursday according to 538. The Broncos have a two percent chance of advancing on past the third round with a less than one percent chance of advancing past that.

How did 538 come up with these numbers? Well considering Silver's predictions of the 2012 Presidential election I'd say it's really some form of black magic, but the site has a less sinister (and more scientific) explanation. Basically the numbers are derived by taking in a range of factors including composite power rankings, the team's placement on the NCAA S-curve, injuries, geography and the hair of a black goat. That last bit may or may not be my own addition.

You can view all the predictions in the interactive graphic on the new
