Former Bowling Green Safety Jerry 'BooBoo' Gates Arrested For Marijuana Trafficking

A former leader on the MAC Champions' defense was arrested for marijuana trafficking Sunday morning.

Former Bowling Green safety Jerry "BooBoo" Gates, 22, was arrested early Sunday by Bowling Green Police for drug trafficking according to a report by the Sentinel-Tribune released Monday morning.

Gates, a former standout in Bowling Green's nationally ranked defense for the past four seasons, was caught by officers while making a drug deal at the Community Commons are in downtown  Bowling Green. Gates was caught red-handed in what the police report obtained by the Sentinel-Tribune described as a "hand-to-hand" drug deal with another man.

Police approached Gates after the deal, and Gates has allegedly admitted to the deal, where he was subsequently arrested and the marijuana and $30 were seized by the officers. According to the Sentinel-Tribune Gates is currently being held without bail.

Just last month Gates was named an athlete of the year at BGSU's annual athletics honors night. In four seasons with the Falcons, Gates earned All-MAC honors three times (first team honors twice), totaling 155 tackles, five interceptions and three forced fumbles while anchoring the secondary on the 2013 MAC Champions. Gates also excelled as on special teams in his career.

It's a tale MAC fans are all too familiar with. A year ago Akron junior point guard Alex Abreu was arrested in the final days of the regular season for his role in a marijuana trafficking ring. Abreu subsequently pleaded guilty to felony drug trafficking charges and received probation.

Still a student at BGSU—final exams begin today, and Gates is a senior expected to graduate—Gates had a shot of making an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent. It's unclear how this arrest, and the subsequent fallout from it, will impact his shot at a professional football career, or more importantly what consequences he'll face for this arrest.

We'll update this story as more details emerge.
