Kent State Wins MAC Tournament

The no. 4 seed entering the MAC tournament at 16-11 in conference play, the Golden Flashes have punched their ticket to the NCAA Regionals for the 14th time in school history.


Game 5: Bowling Green Eliminated by WMU 7-4

The defending MAC Tournament Champions Bowling Green lost their elimination game to Western Michigan.

Down by three, the Falcons took the lead in the 4th inning scoring four runs of their own, putting an early end to Chad Mayle's day, even though only one of the four runs scored against him was earned.

Stalling until the end, Western Michigan went off when the Falcons brought in Ethan McKenney to close out the 9th. Getting only the leadoff hitter Kurt Hoekstra to groundout, five straight batters reached base before McKenney was taken out of the game.

Western Michigan will play tomorrow (5/23) at 4:30 p.m. against the loser of tonight's Ball State vs. Kent State matchup. Bowling Green's baseball season is over.


Game 4: CMU Falls to Akron 9-6

The Zips had a pair of solo home runs in the first two innings, and never lost the lead in their opening round win over the Chippewas.

Kaminska only lasted two innings and threw 40 pitches and had his worst start of the season. Allowing solo home runs in the first (Daulton Mosbarger) and second (Matt LaRocca)  innings, Kaminska allowed five runs to score to give Akron an early 5-0 lead. Akron would later tack on some insurance runs in the 6th with an RBI single from LaRocca and 2 RBI shot by centerfielder Devan Ahart to give the Zips an 8-2 lead.

Central Michigan threatened to make a comeback in the 8th scoring four runs, started by third baseman Morgan Oliver's 2 RBI triple. Central Michigan loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity to come away with the win.

Central Michigan faces 3-seed Miami tomorrow at 1 p.m. in an elimination game on Thursday (5/22) while the Zips take on the Buffalo Bulls at 4:30 p.m.


Game 3: Ball State edges Western Michigan 5-3

Alex Call went 3-for-3 from the leadoff spot to help Ball State take their first game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

TJ Weir started on the hill for the Cardinals, going five innings, allowing five hits and five walks, and struck out six. Three runs were scored against him in the fourth inning where a run was scored against him on a wild pitch followed by a pair of walks. That fourth inning really ran up his pitch count, throwing 29 in that half-frame and had 91 pitches through the fifth. Plesac would come in for relief at the start of the sixth and picked up the win, going four scoreless innings without allowing a walk.

The game was tied at three a piece after the fifth inning until the MAC Player of the Year Sean Godfrey came through with a 1-out, 2-run double in the bottom of the seventh to bring Call and Ryan Spaulding across to score.

Western Michigan will face Bowling Green tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in an elimination game, while Ball State will play Kent State tomorrow at 8 p.m.


Game 2: Kent State wins 6-2

Kent State's early 5-run inning was more than enough to take care of business against the fifth seed Bowling Green Falcons.

Scoreless game heading into the bottom of the fourth, designated hitter Zarley Zalewski hit a triple down the right field line to drive in a pair of runs. Mike Frank retired the next two batters before the Flashes went on a 3-run, 2-out rally to put an end to his day. Three strait hits from Jeff Revesz, Curtis Olvey and Zack Beckner put Kent State ahead 5-0 in the fourth.

Kent State plays again tomorrow at 8 p.m. against the winner of today's Ball State vs. Western Michigan matchup, and Bowling Green will play tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. against the loser of said matchup.


Game 1: Buffalo Beats Miami 6-5

The no. 6 seed Buffalo Bulls beat up on Seth Varner to edge past the Miami RedHawks in the Mid-American Conference Tournament's opening game.

Miami started to build a rally in the bottom of the ninth for a comeback victory with a single from Chad Sedio to start the inning, followed by a 1-out double by second baseman Steve Sada. That ended the day for Buffalo's starting pitcher Kevin Hughes, where Mike Kaelin came in to close, but he didn't make things easy. Sedio would score on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Elble, then Dan Walsh walked on four straight balls, but the rally and the game ended on a John Crummy flyout to left-center field.

Varner, the MAC Pitcher of the Year, had a rough outing in his seven innings of work with 12 hits against him, including three hits off of third baseman Mike Burke. Burke was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and scored twice.

Miami will play tomorrow in Game 6 at 1 p.m. against the loser of tonight's Central Michigan vs. Akron matchup. Buffalo plays tomorrow at 4:30 in Game 7 of the tournament against the winner of that same CMU/Akron game.
