Bowling Green finds a third (fourth, fifth) man

Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIRE

The Falcons finally found their team effort in a 70-55 victory over Kent State, who has still yet to win a game in the Stroh Center.

The knock on this team all along was that, sure, A'uston Calhoun and Jordon Crawford are excellent players and perform well on a nightly basis, but who else is stepping up? Once again when they hosted Kent State, the Best NBA Jam Team In The MAC performed to expectations: Calhoun had 12 points, 13 rebounds. Crawford finished with 12 points, six assists and four steals, but didn't shoot particularly well.

Chauncey Orr. Richaun Holmes. Heck, I'll throw Cameron Black in there. All of them had terrific games.

Orr shot terrific: he went 4-for-5 on threes and led all players with 18 points, a career high for him. Holmes played some menacing defense, blocking four shots and also grabbing four offensive rebounds, scoring eight. And in some limited playing time, Black scored four points, brought down five rebounds and blocked two shots.

The astonishing part of all this is that the Falcons supporting cast picked a heck of a time to have great games. Of all teams, Kent State - a sound team on both sides of the court. Once again they had trouble hitting shots, especially for three, making just three of 17 attempts.

If they played this game again tonight, I have this fear that KSU will be the ones winning by 10, because that's what you get out of college-aged young men: inconsistency. Nonetheless, both teams are tied in the standings at 2-3, because eight of the 12 damn teams are at 2-3.

And here's a fun stat per Jason Knavel of BGSU: Kent State is now 0-6 all time in the Stroh Center if you include men's/women's basketball and volleyball. All four basketball losses have been by double digits, and the two volleyball matches were sweeps. I'm not a man swelling with optimism, but I'm sure this will be kept up for at least 20 years.
