Kent State used a strong run in the second half to put away the Catamounts of Western Carolina in the first game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Subregional being hosted by the Golden Flashes.
Mark Henniger had a career high seventeen points and nine rebounds. That's two consecutive double-digit point totals for "Henny" after a thirteen point performance against Saint Peter's. The competition may be not the best, but it's a promising sign for the Golden Flashes that Henniger is starting to improve. Anything they can get out of him this year is a positive, and if he starts scoring consistently Kent State will have a much better team than everyone thought at the beginning of the season.
Kent State was just 2-15 from the three-point line, which is a little concerning. K.K. Simmons was perfect from the floor, going 8-8 and scoring twelve points off of the bench. Kris Brewer also had twelve.
Kent State moves on to the second game of the subregional against USC-Upstate. The Spartans started the season by knocking off Virginia Tech before losing their next two games to Winthrop and Tennessee. The game is at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on the MAC Digital Network.
