Let me start out by saying that this is the WMU side of last night's game, where Toledo downed WMU for a 3rd straight year. This year wasn't the barn-burner like last year's, being more of a blowout with a final score of 37-17. With the win, the Rockets rise to 4-1 (1-0), and suddenly look like the team to beat in the West along with NIU. With the loss, WMU falls to 2-3 (0-1), and suddenly look to be headed to another 7-5 year.
David Fluellen had a career day, and then some, rushing for 213 yards on 21 carries and 3 TDs. He had 110 yards (breaking his career high) in the first 21 minutes alone! Terrance Owens went 22/33 passing for 243 yards, and Jeremiah Detmer hit 3 field goals (28, 20, 23 yds) to secure a big victory in a game that many thought would be a MAC West key game.
On the flip side, Tyler VanTubbergen went 26/46 for 232 yds and a TD, but threw 3 interceptions including a Pick-6 that turned the tide in full favor of the Rockets in the 3rd quarter. Dareyon Chance rushed for 104 yds on 17 carries and Brian Fields had a 48-yard TD as well. Jaime Wilson had another 100 yard game receiving catching 10 passes for 103 yds and a TD. The Broncos blocked a 52 yard FG and recorded a crazy safety, but played rather poorly in the loss.
Looking ahead for both teams, you have to start with the Rockets. They continue their "Michigan Directional" series with Central and Eastern, and their Wednesday night game at NIU is really starting to look like the MAC West Championship. For the Broncos, they get UMass at home next weekend, which isn't looking too easy after this past week. Alex Carder is still in Kansas having his hand evaluated, and his return is unknown except that he will be back some time this year. In all, the Bronco offense has to turn it up, and if they can beat Ball State, Kent State, and NIU, maybe there is something still left in this season.
