MAC Football Power Rankings Week 13: The Aftermath of A Wacky Week of MACtion

Brian Kersey

There's some shifting going on in the power structures of the MAC this week as some teams whimper out down the stretch, and others put up strong showings. But up top things look eerily similar.

Rank Rank (Pv) Team Record What We Learned
1 1 NIU 10-0 (6-0) Northern Illinois haters were counting down the days until Wednesday's matchup with Ball State, and when the challenge came, the Huskies answered. NIU looked solid all night long. The offense (Jordan Lynch) showed off why it's so dangerous, outpacing one of the nations most balanced offensive attacks. The defense, which looked awful in the first half, bounced back in the second half, shutting down Keith Wenning and company. NIU showed why its still the top dog Wednesday night, but has to do it again this Wednesday, at Toledo.
2 2 Ball State 9-2 (5-1) Yes, Ball State lost by 21. But the game was closer than that in actuality. The fact is Ball State hung in with the No. 15 team in the nation for most of the game, and that's nothing to scoff at. BSU is still a fantastic team, and for now, still the second best team in the conference, even with the loss.
3 3 Toledo 7-3 (5-1) Toledo has improved steadily week-by-week, and proved so Tuesday when the Rockets took down a red-hot Buffalo team 51-41. Toledo jumped out to a huge lead, but let the Bulls score 27 points in the fourth to cut a blowout close. That's not necessarily a sign of anything wrong with Toledo though, as Buffalo has proven it's a bully in the East. But Toledo will need to prove it can hang better with NIU than Ball State did before it leap frogs the team that beat it at the beginning of the season.
4 5 Bowling Green

7-3 (5-1)

Another week, another blowout for the Falcons. BGSU manhandled Ohio, handing the Bobcats their worst loss in the Frank Solich era. Bowling Green looked like a far superior team Tuesday, and as much as Ohio is to blame for a lack of intensity, BG pummeled Ohio before it even began, going up 14-0 on three plays. When BG and Buffalo face off in a few weeks, it'll be one hell of a game.
5 4 Buffalo 7-3 (5-1) The Bulls drop, ever so slightly this week because of how long it took them to get going against Toledo. Even with that, Buffalo managed to turn a blowout into a close contest and put up some insane offensive numbers. When it comes to defense, only BG is better in the MAC, but the Bulls offense is making a case that it might be the better of the two. We'll find out for sure when the two face off on Black Friday.
6 7 CMU

4-6 (3-3)

CMU doesn't look pretty when it plays, and a 5-point win over WMU doesn't look all that impressive, until you realize the Chippewas managed to pull out a win despite repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot (5 times in all). Zurlon Tipton is back and puts this team at a higher level. CMU could very well finish this season at .500, and if you put this team playing now in those earlier games, the record would look a lot different.
7 6 Ohio 6-4 (3-3) My how the 'Cats have fallen. For the second straight season Ohio's roar has whimpered out to a meow in fantastic fashion. The Bobcats were inferior on all fronts to Buffalo a week ago, and proved to be beneath Bowling Green this past Tuesday. The team has no heart, and seems to be mentally weak. Frank Solich might not be the motivator that he used to be, and it showed. Seniors have checked out, and there's still two games left. The house that Frank built could go up in flames by season's end.
8 8 Akron

4-7 (3-4) Like CMU, Akron doesn't win pretty, but it has managed to win. The Zips are a young team that's learning how to win close games. When the pieces fall in place in the coming seasons that experience will prove invaluable.
9 9 Kent State

3-8 (2-5)

Kent State bullied an awful Miami team as expected. But, there's still too many holes in the Golden Flashes lineup. Trayion Durham and Dri Archer are shells of their 2012 selfs. The defense is banged up and broken. In the Flashes' season-finale Tuesday against Ohio, we'll get our last chance to see if Kent State still has it or not.
10 10 EMU

2-8 (1-5)

Bye-week. Nothing to see here.
11 11 WMU 1-10 (1-6) WMU is a young, and depleted team. It showed Saturday as the Broncos were unable to capitalize on CMU's mistakes. Zach Terrell still doesn't have the touch you'd expect from a starter, and the team is incredibly unhealthy. But, there are brief shimmers of hope in this squad, just don't expect to see them shine in the final weeks of the season.
12 12 UMass

1-9 (1-5)

The Minutemen are a confusing team. At times they look like they're better than their record, then other times they look awful. Saturday against Akron was a bit of a mix of both of those. Of course the injuries A.J. Doyle keeps suffering aren't helping.
13 13 Miami 0-10 (0-6) Miami is not going to win a game this season. Not that that's news to anyone. For RedHawks' fans, the only hope is that Zac Murphy gets some national recognition for the outstanding season he's having at punter. He's going to fall short of the NCAA records, which is good news for everyone involved.
