FINAL: Bowling Green 45, Miami 3

During the first quarter, it looked like Miami might just be able to hang with Bowling Green.  Their offense had two pretty nice drives and, despite some mistakes, trailed only 7-3 after 15 minutes.

Then, reality set in.  The Falcons scored 38 unanswered points over the next two quarters and walked away with a 45-3 victory.

BGSU accrued 447 yards of total offense compared to Miami's 228.  Miami's problem, primarily, was that almost all of that offense took place in the first and fourth quarters.  In between, when BGSU was scoring those 38 straight points, Miami's offense was almost non-existent and turned the ball over the times.

Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson was 20-for-26 with 252 yards and three touchdown passes.  He was also intercepted once.  Travis Greene rushed for 112 yards on 14 carries, and that total pushed him over the 1,000 yard mark for the season.  He's the first Falcon to reach that total since 2004 and is just the 11th BGSU player all-time to do so.  Freshman Fred Coppet added 46 yards on 9 carries.  Nine different players caught a pass, and three of those caught the touchdown throws.  Ryan Burbrink led with four catches for 51 yards.  Shaun Joplin and Alex Bayer both had touchdown catches, and Chris Pohlman had an acrobatic 38-yard reception for a touchdown in the third quarter -- his only catch of the game.

Miami freshman Drew Kummer completed nine of 19 passes for 100 yards, while Austin Gearing completed all six of his passes for 31 yards.  Grant Niemiec led Miami runners with five carries for 40 yards.  Spencer Treadwell had 11 carries but those went for just 33 yards.  Alvonta Jenkins caught three balls for a team-best 52 yards.

Miami falls to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the MAC.  Their final "best" opportunity to win will come next week when they travel to Kent State.  After that, the RedHawks host Buffalo and travel to Ball State.

Bowling Green improves to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the MAC.  The Falcons are now bowl eligible for the second consecutive season.  Unfortunately for BGSU, Buffalo also won tonight, which means that the Falcons remain one game behind the Bulls in the MAC's Eastern Division.  Bowling Green will likely need to win their final three games in order to win the division -- they host Ohio next Tuesday night before closing the season with road games at Eastern Michigan and then Buffalo.  The game at Buffalo may end up being a winner-take-all game for the division title.
