Bowling Green Stuns Northern Illinois, Claims 2013 MAC Championship

No one saw this coming. In the biggest moment of the 2013 MAC Football season the Northern Illinois Huskies fell victim to a rolling Bowling Green team. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Matt Johnson emerged as a superstar, tossing for five touchdowns en route to burying NIU's BCS dreams and possibly Jordan Lynch's chances of a trip to New York. BG did the unthinkable, knocking off the two-time reigning MAC Champions by twenty points. At the same time the Falcons snapped the nation's longest running conference winning streak and may have just established themselves as the new power in the MAC.

MAC Announces 2013 Bowl Selections

No more speculation necessary. We now know who will be going where for the postseason, as well as which teams have the misfortune of no postseason at all. Are you ready for a surprise?

MAC Bowl Outlook: Final Weekend

The complete bowl schedule will be known to all in fewer than 36 hours, but there are some mysteries about the picture yet to be solved. Let's take a look at where the MAC stands after last night's momentous upset.

BGSU Wins 2013 MAC Championship Over NIU by 20

Both teams broke some records, but Bowling Green was the only team to break some hearts. A big 47-27 victory for the Falcons brings BGSU their first MAC Championship title since 1992.

BG Falcons Claw Northern Illinois

The torch has been passed at the Marathon MAC Championship Game at Ford Field on Friday Night in Detroit. Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson put on an offensive clinic and took apart the vaunted NIU Huskies in record breaking impressive fashion.

Johnson set a MAC Championship record by passing for five touchdowns en route to a drubbing of Jordan Lynch and the nationally ranked Northern Illinois Huskies. To add insult to injury, Lynch was intercepted twice by the Bowling Green defense. The key play of the game occurred when Lynch was intercepted by Falcon safety Aaron Foster. Foster returned the pick 37 yards and set up a Bowling Green touchdown which sealed the game and gave Falcons a 40-20 lead late in the fourth quarter.

The heir apparent to future MAC leadership, Matt Johnson finished the game going 21 for 27 in passing for five touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson won the game for BG by using savvy normally found in a veteran quarterback and surprising speed which gave the Falcons the decisive advantage.

Travis Green finished the game with 26 carries for 133 yards and one touchdown. Ronnie Moore was the star of the first quarter for BG with four catches for 145 yards.

BGSU Leads NIU After Three Quarters

Jordan Lynch ran for an eight yard touchdown in the third quarter as the NIU Huskies have brought the game back to a two score contest. The teams have traded missed field goals in the quarter as the torrid offensive pace has slowed.

BG begins the third quarter with third down and seven at the NIU 22 yard line.

Jordan Lynch Sets Another NCAA Record

Early in the third quarter Jordan Lynch rumbled eight yards for a score to cut the NIU Huskies deficit to 31-20 after a miserable first half. It was the first truly successful run for Lynch on the night, as he struggled all throughout the first two quarters against Bowling Green's Top 10-defense. But it wasn't only a key run in terms of the game, but also in terms of the NCAA record books.

The run brought his season rushing total up to 1,823 yards, breaking the NCAA record for a quarterback, which Lynch set last season by running for 1,815.

With nearly two quarters left, and a bowl game to go, Lynch is ever closer to becoming the first player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 and throw for 2,000 yards in the same season.

Bowling Green Is Shocking NIU 31-13 At The Half

Matt Johnson and the Bowling Green Falcons are playing out of their minds at the Marathon MAC Championship Game at Ford Field. Johnson has completed 16 of 19 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns.

Jordan Lynch and the NIU Huskies entered the game as heavy favorites. However, lightning has struck four times with four different Falcon receivers catching touchdown strikes so far. Johnson's elusiveness has been a big factor in BG scoring drives as time and again it has been his fleet feet that have kept drives alive and the NIU offense of the field.

Falcon Ronnie Moore leads all BG receivers with 145 yards on six catches. Moore has been a Huskie killer in the first half by catching a touchdown pass and going for a spectacular run after a catch that set up a field goal in the first half.

BGSU has out gained NIU 381 to 229. The bright spot for the Huskies has been placekicker Mathew Sims, who has two long field goals.

BGSU is Flying Past NIU After One Quarter.

Bowling Green slot receiver Ronnie Moore has been an offensive machine in the first quarter. Moore caught a 36 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Johnson. The touchdown was set up by a spectacular Moore reception where he broke five tackles.

NIU receiver Juwan Brescacin caught a 14 yard touchdown pass from Jordan Lynch. BGSU has outgained NIU 181 to 97.

Listen To This Awful NIU-Themed Remix To "Return of the MACK"

NIU is playing in the Marathon MAC Championship game for the fourth consecutive season Friday, with a shot at a third straight title and another BCS bowl berth on the line. In the spirit of the big game some NIU fans decided to make a MAC Championship song about the Huskies fourth consecutive trip to Detroit.

Remixed to the tune of Mark Morrison's "Return of the MAC", the "Return to the MAC" song is a funky, awful, auto-tuned mess that's sure to get you pumped up for some MAC Football, aspirin and new eardrums.

With hard-hitting lyrics such as, "Just like that the cannon blew / Sims kicks it and it goes through" and "Jimmie Ward leads the defense / And Bishop does all the rest" the only way this song could sound any worse is if Diesel rapped the whole thing in a spit-fire cadence of barks. Actually, that might be better.

Just give it a listen for yourself, and be ready for "The Return to the MAC".
