Defensive struggle is one way to put this. NIU led just 22-17 at halftime, and even though the pace was slow, neither team was particularly dazzling shooting from the ifeld. Amanda Corral led the way with 10 points and eight rebounds. It's just the second time in NIU history that they held somebody to under 40 points. The other time was against Central Michigan on March 3, 2001, when they prevailed 57-35.
It should be noted that head coach Kathi Bennett did not coach this game as she was serving a one-game suspension for "violation of athletic department policy." With that defense, maybe she should be suspended more often.
NIU improves to 4-5, and them and Bennett will head to UIC on Saturday.
