Well, CMU didn't win the Maggie Dixon Surf 'n Slam Classic thanks to their loss to host team San Diego, but they did win the consolation by knocking off a ranked (soon to be unranked) Texas Longhorns team. Pretty darn good consolation, I'd say. UT jumped out to an eight-point lead early, but CMU took the lead for good with 7:00 left in the first half thanks to some huge bench play. CMU was able to create some turnovers by virtue of 11 steals, winning the turnover battle 23-12, and slowed down the game by getting to the line and sinking 21-of-26 free throws.
Niki DiGuilio led the Chips with 21 points on 5-for-8 3-point shooting and Jessica Schroll added 14 points.
CMU is no secret in the MAC; they've been known for high-tempo, high-scoring games and they did knock off ranked Purdue and snuck out a win at Ole Miss last season. They're at 6-6 in this nonconference season, which has had ups and downs, but this is a strong "up" for them. One more shot at a Pink Line Upset will come on Wednesday when CMU faces Marquette.
