Ohio vs. East Carolina: 2013 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl

Ohio is going bowling after all. The 'Cats get a chance to take on the ECU Pirates two days before Christmas on ESPN. The Pirates dominated opponents all season long before falling to Marshall just before the C-USA Championship game. If Ohio wants to make it three straight bowl wins it will need to figure out away to stop ECU's potent passing attack and get its own running game going, for one. We'll be covering all the build up to the game, and the game itself, right here.

'Cats Season Ends As It Began, In A Ball of Flames

The Ohio Bobcats fought hard for most of the game, but in the end their own mistakes got the best of them and derailed their course of attack in route to an embarrassing 17-point loss.

East Carolina Wins First Bowl In Last Five Tries

A hard played and surprisingly defensive second half results in a __ East Carolina

Ohio hit a field goal early in the fourth, and on the ensuing kickoff, kicker Josiah Yazdani popped up an onside kick. The perfectly executed kick landed in the arms of Devin Bass. Ohio did not go on to score on the drive, as Josiah Yazdani, who had previously been perfect on the year on 14 field goal kicks, missed wide left on a 45-yard attempt.

East Carolina responded by picking up their struggling offense with a couple penalties and a 31-yard Vintavious Cooper romp to the house.

After an Ohio three-and-out, ECU responded with a 47-yard drive on six plays. A double pass went to Shane Carden, who out leaped two defenders for the score, putting the Pirates up 31-20.

Tyler Tettleton was picked multiple times in the fourth quarter and threw three picks on the day.

ECU, which came into the game ranked 107th in the nation in rushing, ran for 198 yards on 25 attempts in addition to the 273 yards Carden had. He added a late touchdown to ice things. The Pirates put together 568 yards on the day, surprisingly not too much more than the 435 Ohio picked up.

281 of those yards came on the ground for ECU compared to 107 for Ohio.

Offenses Struggle In 3rd As Things Are Tied 17-17

Both offenses had their struggles in the third as the two teams traded punts. Ohio swarmed ECU's Carden several times in the quarter, making things uncomfortable for the signal caller.

Warren Harvey missed a 29-yard field goal wide right with just under two minutes remaining in the third.

Ohio responded with a pass to Dante Foster 39 yards before a one-yard loss ended the quarter.

Ohio outgained the Pirates this time around in the third quarter 137-86.

WATCH Derrius Vick's 80-Yd TD Pass

Ohio backup quarterback spelled Tyler Tettleton midway through the second quarter and threw this bomb of a touchdown pass to Donte Foster to tie the game up at 14-14 It's the longest play in Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl game history. Yes, they have a record book, it's next to the drinks menu.

Argh. Meow. East Carolina Leads Ohio 17-14 at Half

Ohio responded in the second quarter to the ECU assault, slowing the Pirates' offense down. Ohio came up with two big stops on fourth downs in the first half against a team that has converted 12 times on fourth down this season. ECU finally went with its kicker Warren Harvey for a 4-yard field goal with a minute left in the half.

Ohio pulled a couple nifty plays out of its playbook in the quarter as well. A double reverse pass to Daz Patterson netted the Bobcats 26 yards and a few players later, Tettleton swung a pass out to Patterson in the flats. Patterson picked up a couple blocks from wide receivers and scored easily to bring the game within one score at 14-7.

After another Ohio stop, Derrius Vick stepped in at quarterback. Vick faked running a speed option out of the pistol, stepped back and launched an 80-yard bomb to Dante Foster to knot things up at 14.

Ohio passed for 168 yards and totaled 223. East Carolina scored 17 points even with 365 yards in the first 30 minutes of play.

Shane Carden totaled 199 yards through the air while Vintavious Cooper gashed the Ohio defense for 104 yards on the ground on 13 carries.

After a Quarter In St. Petersburg, ECU Leads

Ohio stopped ECU on its first drive to start the Beef 'O'Brady's bowl, but turned the ball back over to the Pirates on a Tyler Tettleton interception to Michael Dobson. The Pirates then went 55 yards, with most of those yards being picked up courtesy a 34-yard Vintavious Cooper run to the five-yard line.

Cam Worthy then hauled in a five-yard fade pass lofted high in the air by Carden to make it 7-0.

The two teams traded possessions, and after another Bobcat punt, ECU drove the field with Breon Allen scoring a short run to cap an 11-play 76-yard drive.

ECU has picked up 207 yards to Ohio's 72, and could be well on their way to a BIG offensive showing as many of our contributors predicted.
