Well, it's all over. Much was learned about the 13 schools and their standouts. And just like that, football season's almost here. What a nifty little way to pass the time, hiding from the 90-degree sun, friends, family, obligations, and the mob.

How spread out are all these people? None of them played together. There's quite a good sampling of players dating back to the '30s. That's what makes their recent inept team so harrowing. These guys used to be great. Not "national powerhouse" great, but one of the top-tier teams any given year.
It was hard to narrow down the list to even seven people, but here we go. The case for each is after the jump.

Offense, offense, offense. For the last 45 years that is how the Rockets have been well-known. (And sometimes defense.) Here are six standouts dating back to their glory years of the early '70s.

It's not where it used to be, but WMU had a historic baseball program back in the 50s. A couple sweet-swinging outfielders followed in the '80s, and that's mostly it. And looking at the entire collection of Broncos baseballers, the list is rather eclectic. We have some retro '50s players, secondary '90s players, a groundbreaking author, and an MLB general manager. Something for every flavor.

At first I was all, "jeez, I'm surprised I can't think of more WMU basketball players." Then I looked at the history. A sub-.500 record in MAC games. Was that normal? I then realized that only four teams in MAC history have all-time winning records in conference play: Bowling Green, Miami, OHIO, and Toledo. Okay, so WMU's not in terrible company. But for a long history their collection of MAC players falls into the category of brief yet memorable.
I've picked out a list of four, and admittedly maybe more oughta be considered, but these four stand out.

The best way to sum up WMU football is with Bob Seger. Not any particular song, but his entire oeuvre. Seger is a ridiculously fun listen, but oftentimes he's forgotten when compared to other greats, even when focusing on Michigan-based artists. So is WMU: usually good, sometimes great, and they've always produced some standout players.
I've got a list of six deserving football players who all warrant a spot in the Broncos' set of nine players for MACwood Squares. Who am I missing?

It's one of the thinner casts of the conference, but the nine stand out rather nicely. Good thing these lists aren't 16-deep. That'd also be one hard tic-tac-toe game to win. An overly brief snipped of each person's athletic career appears below the jump.
