Notes from last night in MAC basketball:
CMU 67, Pepperdine 57 — What's this west coast road win I see before me? The Waves, who beat Arizona State, could not handle the energy and snazzy hair of the Chippewas, who led for all of the second half, and rather substantially. An unexpectedly efficient night from Trey Zeigler might've been the difference: 16 points on nine shots, seven rebounds and six assists. Derek Jackson had 12 points and four assists. They were outrebounded but shot, as a team, a wonderful 58.2 eFG%. Excellent upset of a West Coast opponent. I'm sure the folk in Malibu are left scratchin' their heads.
BGSU 82, Austin Peay 72 — Fly is not open. But A`uston Calhoun was. 19 points and seven rebounds led the way to this CBE Classic Subregional victory over the Governors. Dee Brown was the best shooter of the night, going 3-for-4 on 3-point shots, finishing with 17 points. The entire team went 8-for-13 on such shots, which is a bit uncharacteristic, but it works.
Games in which the MAC were bullies against lesser opponents:
Miami 71, Saginaw Valley State 61
Toledo 90, Victory 47
Women's games:
Ball State 68, Oakland City 39 — This game was at one point a 25-3 lead for the Cardinals. Good to see it "evened out" a little. No Marygrove Redux.
