MACwood Squares is our summer reading series on the best athletes in Mid-American Conference sports history. This week features OHIO. Looking for your MAC school? Consult our schedule for other teams and please submit your nominees as well.
Not the most time in the world to sort this one out, but there will be women in the final product. Just not sure which ones.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Caroline Mast, without question. She was a three-time MAC Player of the Year and their all-time leading scorer. By FAR. 2,449 is 859 points (more than a full season's worth) more than second place. Mast averaged 21.9 points a game and 10.9 rebounds in her four-year career. And yes, she also holds the rebounding record by 332. No other OHIO player has won MAC POY in women's basketball, nor has anybody won the award three times.
VOLLEYBALL: Ellen Herman is generally regarded as one of the best MAC volleyball players of all time. She holds several school/conference records and made four All-MAC first teams, along with receiving two All-American nods. A year of playing professionally in Germany (they have that!), she's now on the coaching staff for Connecticut.
SOFTBALL: Jen Morris was one of their first standouts, but this year Emily Wethington joined that short list. She actually holds the school records in wins (pitching) and home runs (hitting).
Others to consider? Last call.
