Clayton Moore Is The Zips Starting QB: Tonto Is Backup

Akron Lone Ranger
Akron Lone Ranger

This may not make much of a difference in the outcome of their opening game at Ohio State, but coach Rob Ianello has tapped Clayton Moore, no relation to the Lone Ranger, as Akron's starting quarterback. He won the battle over Patrick Nicely, who started most of last year but with a sub-50-percent completion rate and only 146 yards per game. To say the least, he struggled.

Moore was originally a commit to Ole Miss but for whatever reason (injury or attitude) the scholarship was withdrawn and Moore played junior college ball at Gulf Coast CC. He's got skill as evidenced by his JuCo numbers: 2,395 yards and 23 touchdowns.

But if Nicely wants to play along with this theme, then he's going to adopt the nickname "Tonto." Actually, who would be the Tonto in this situation? Maybe that's fellow junior college ransfer A.J. Price. Or his running backs, Broderick Alexander and Jawon Chisholm.

Zippy is Silver. Of this we know.
