The joke you are looking for is that the MAC didn't respond to GoDaddy.com email notifications and an automatic four-year renewal kicked in. There may be others but that's the one we're going with.
But in actuality, unlike a domain name you really didn't want anymore, with MAC football continuing to play the game in Mobile, Alabama, this just keeps bringing them a very winnable game in the postseason. It used to be a matchup against someone from Conference USA but they don't bring their best, so why should the MAC bring theirs?
Having MAC champions-or-first-pickies against the Sun Belt champion has made this a neat little game in recent memory. I mean, Christ, look at the history of the bowl game. The GMAC Bowl never had a winner score fewer than 41 points. The two years it's been called the GoDaddy.com Bowl, however ... enh, not so much excitement, but the potential has always been there. NIU-Arkansas State was supposed to be, I believe, a 57-51 quad-overtime game which for some reason didn't pan out. But they did win both times, and maybe the MAC is a notch above the SBC in the pecking order ... but we don't mind, so long as it helps the bowl record!
Only two teams outside the MAC have won the bowl: Southern Miss (boo!) and Tulsa twice (BOOOOO!), so I think we're in good shape to see future victories. Don't spoil it this year, OHIO! (Hey see what I did there?)
