Chauncey Gilliam, Akron's seventh-leading scorer at 7.3 points per game, will miss two weeks with a meniscus tear according to George Thomas of the Akron Beacon-Journal.
Gilliam is a regular starter for the Zips, and will be certainly missed. But, Akron's depth and easy-ish schedule should help things. Jake Kretzer or Nick Harney can now be easily inserted into the starting lineup without messing the rotation things up too much. When Keith Dambrot has eleven quality players at his disposal, missing one does not hurt too much. Plus, the games Gilliam will likely miss include Western Michigan (1/9), at Northern Illinois (1/12), Ball State (1/16), at Kent State (1/19) and at Toledo (1/23). The Kent State game will be a little tougher, but will still be manageable.
Injuries are never a good thing, just ask the 2011-2012 Western Michigan team. But, if an injury to a key contributor happens, you want it to be in early January.
