On Monday, UMass Minutemen head coach Charley Molnar met with members of the media to discuss the 2013 season and where things appear to be headed. He discussed everything from Faculty Senate issues to the pressure he feels internally within the program to start winning and everything in between.
Bob McGovern of 247sports and the Boston Herald, Daniel Malone of the Springfield Republican, and Matt Vautour of The Daily Hampshire Gazette were the media members invited to this sit down and all three of them will have articles rolling out today related to what was discussed there. For more updates, you should really give them follows on Twitter @BobMcGovernJr @Daniel_Malone and @GazetteUMass.
Below, find links to all of the articles. (Will be updated throughout the day)
- Vautour on QB's, pressure, and optimism.
- McGovern on positive trends.
- Malone on the "State of the Program."
- Malone on competition at the quarterback position.
- Malone on defining what success means in 2014.
One key trend to pick out from this is the suggestion that current tight end coach and recruiting coordinator Shane Waldron is next in line for the Offensive Coordinator job left vacant by John Bond earlier this month. From Malone's "State of the Program":
One of the primary candidates is an in-house option – tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Shane Waldron, whom Molnar called a "very, very bright young coach."
"(He) knows what we need and knows the players inside and out," Molnar said. "He's had his hand in recruiting about half the guys on the team, so he knows them as well as I do. There's a reason his office is right next to mine – we talk constantly."
"We haven't gone that far yet," Molnar said when asked if Waldron had already been promoted. "But he's expecting an expanded role. And he certainly deserves it."
Waldron is a young and energetic guy who is hard to miss on the field. He commands the respect of the players and would make sense as the replacement.
