Where do you begin in replacing two program-impacting defensive ends like Jayrone Elliott and Christian Smith? Recruiting. That's exactly where Toledo head coach, Matt Campbell is beginning his search for the next edge rushers for his defense. The Rockets got great news on junior college signing day that Snow College, Utah defensive end, Tre James was going to sign his letter of intent to play for Toledo.
"We are very please to add Tre to our 2014 recruiting class," said head coach, Matt Campell. "With the loss of Jayrone Elliott and Christian Smith, the recruitment of a high-end pass rusher became a primary focus for us in this recruiting class."
James is a 6-2, 250 pound defensive end who is known as a freakish pass-rusher and knows how to get to the quarterback. As a sophomore at Snow College, James recorded 34 tackles, 9.5 for a loss, and four sacks in just eleven games. As a freshman at Snow, James recorded fifteen tackles and 6.5 sacks. He attended high school at Baltimore City high school in Maryland.
"Tre gives us an immediate-impact talent," said Coach Campbell. "He is also a young man with great character and work ethic that will help lead this program in the future."
James visited Toledo on December 13th and was planning a visit to North Texas as well, but his college finals delayed those plans. When signing day came on December 18th, James knew exactly what he wanted to do. For James, he says he has found a home in Toledo and said he felt extremely comfortable with the Rocket coaching staff and players. James will be on Toledo's campus in January and will be eligible to practice this spring.
