φ The quarterback position battle is heating up at Central Michigan's preseason camp — Last season senior signal caller Ryan Radcliff led the Chippewas to a win in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl and concluded a successful three-year run as the starter. But he's gone now, and with Zurlon Tipton back, and the Chippewas focused on improving an offense that finished in the middle of the pack, there are some big shoes to fill at quarterback. There's a three-way battle going on right now, and it appears all three are on equal footing, for now. Junior Cody Kater brings experience, but redshirt sophomore Alex Niznak is the superior athlete, and redshirt freshman Cooper Rush is a superior passer. It remains a tight battle even a week into camp. This might be one of the most important position battles in the MAC. We'll keep checking in on this.
φ Dri Archer is fast, and famous, now — A year ago Dri Archer was a very small fish, on a team known for having the worst overall winning percentage in the FBS. Fast forward to now, and Archer is becoming a national name. He's an All-American, one of the fastest and most talented players in the country, and has a school backed Heisman campaign gaining him national media attention. With fame comes attention. Archer says he currently gets stopped when he's out in public and asked for autographs, photos and in one interesting instance was challenged to a foot race by an on-the-clock pizza man. The Rocket won in case you were wondering.
φ "Locker room...Dance club...What's the difference?" — UMass sophomore starting quarterback Mike Wegzyn asks the question. In this short video he took while inside the Minutemen locker room we understand why he might be confused. The UMass players get down on the imaginary dance floor, showing off some...interesting moves. I'm just waiting for news to come out of Amherst that one of the players sustained an injury while in the midst of a vicious breakdance battle.
φ Kent State men's golf team ranked No. 22 in the nation — We don't cover golf often on Hustle Belt, but not because there's a alack of talent in the MAC. Kent State has been one of the better programs in the nation for sometime and currently features two of the nations best collegiate golfers in senior Corey Conners and Taylor Pendrith. Head coach Herb Page has been a legend in the NCAA golf world and it looks like his 2013-14 team is poised to add to his legacy.
φ Eric Fisher is showing why he was taken first overall in Kansas City's preseason so far — He's playing great, and helping proving to be a dominate force on the offensive line. But in the first preseason game of the year for the Chiefs, it appears he sustained some injuries. He only logged 14 plays against the Saints before leaving to get x-rays. It appears he sustained minor injuries to his shoulder and thumb, but it's nothing to be concerned about according to head coach Andy Reid. Fisher is day-to-day according to Reid.
