MAC Basketball Week In Review: Logjammin'

Five teams sit at 3-1, notably Toledo who took a big win at Akron. Four more sit at 2-2.

The logjam atop the MAC standings could sure use a chainsaw.

The Juice Brown walkoff jumper may have jump-started this team after the WMU loss, but the game at Akron brought them back into the picture as a front-runner. But we know they can score. I'm more impressed with the defensive numbers.

Big wins against the lesser teams in the MAC shouldn't be a big story, but everyone seems to be either dropping these contests or letting them hang around. Good on you, Bobcats.

Demetrius Treadwell posted back-to-back double-doubles, leading his team in both points and rebounds in both contests. He also led his team in assists (3) once. So don't blame him for the Toledo loss at all. The point guard situation is going to be an issue, but this won't improve anytime soon, unless Carmelo Betancourt suddenly figures it all out.

Yes, their defense is still there defense. Mike Talley didn't get the memo, who has scored at least 14 points in all conference games.

If it wasn't Buffalo at 3-1, it would be Kent State at 3-1. So there'd be first-place confusion either way. Maybe logjams are what makes the world go round.

One week you're beating Toledo. The next you're falling to some of the worst teams in the MAC. Thanks a lot, Western Michigan, for again confusing the heck out of us. Related: nobody has ever correctly pronounced "Connar Tava."

No, they're not playing their best, but they're in their "dormant volcano" mode right now — just kind of hanging around until they make their move somewhere down the line. So don't go building any cities around Kent State basketball, for fear of ashen lava death.

I caught a bit of the BGSU-WMU game on the radio Sunday afternoon, specifically the frenzied second half, specifically "the good part" — from 7:44 to the media timeout at 2:05, where I don't think a single stoppage in action existed. By this time my radio started cutting out, which was probably for the best. I was driving, and expected a loss, which could have resulted in some highway carnage. A win at WMU is a pleasant surprise, and while it may not save Louis Orr's job, every win will help salvage his semi-long era here.

Don't let the record fool anyone; their two wins are against the two 0-4 teams. They'll need some W's against the upper teams, but everybody's doing it these days so it'll happen eventually.

They let a beautiful opportunity slip away against Kent State, being up by double digits within 10 minutes of that contest, and that just would've made this entire early standings exponentially weirder. One other odd note: Aaron Armstead lead the team in scoring both times last week, his first(s) of the season.

The George Mason win proves you can be on the brink of losing any game, and then not lose the game. It's a proof that is now going to ultimately doom them down the road: they'll be down 30 points with five minutes to go. "We got this," they'll say. And ... they'll lose by 15.
