Things are starting to heat up as MAC Tennis is starting to get off and running. There was a few surprises this week as Ball State lost for the first time this season on the men’s side while the Cardinals’ female counterparts pulled off a big win on the road against Michigan State.
Men’s Results:
Toledo (0-6): After starting off the match against Duquesne with a lead following doubles play, the Rockets would drop four out of six singles matches en route to a 4-3 defeat. UT then fell 0-4 to No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday. Toledo has five matches this week as Tennessee Tech and Louisville on Thursday, Youngstown State and Ferris State on Saturday, and IPFW on Sunday.
Northern Illinois (2-1): In their doubleheader on Friday, the Huskies downed IPFW and Chicago State 7-0 and 6-1 respectively. NIU will host Southern Illinois on Friday.
Ball State (2-1): The Cardinals sustained their first defeat of the season as they fell 5-2 to Cleveland State, who had taken five of the six singles matches. BSU hits the road this weekend to take on Michigan State on Saturday.
Western Michigan (4-1): The Broncos won their third straight match as they defeated Cleveland State on the road 4-3 as sophomores Ruben Greiner and Jim Beckwith won as a doubles pair and individually in singles. This weekend, WMU will have to continue its roadstand as it faces Indiana and Illinois State on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Buffalo (1-0): The Bulls host Cleveland State on Saturday.
Women’s Results:
Toledo (1-2): The Rockets earned their first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Duquesne as junior Lexy Pitt and sophomore Emily Mazzola accounted for three of those points with a doubles win and triumphs in singles play. Toledo faces IUPUI, UIC, and Detroit this weekend.
Western Michigan (3-1): In a doubleheader on Saturday, the Broncos beat Butler and Chicago State 7-0 and 6-1 respectively as fifty-fifth ranked singles player in the country senior Kathleen Hawkins emerged victorious in her first singles match of the season. WMU will host another doubleheader on Friday as they take on Indiana and Oakland.
Ball State (4-1): The Cardinals defeated Oakland 6-1 as sophomore Courtney Earnest earned MAC Player of the Week honors prior to the match as she went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles to start the season. Ball State also managed to beat Michigan State 4-3 after being down 1-3 in the match. BSU returns home on Saturday to host Cleveland State.
Eastern Michigan (5-1): The Eagle took both matches in their doubleheader 5-2 against IPFW and Oakland. EMU returns to action on the road as it faces Michigan State.
Northern Illinois (1-0): The Huskies defeated Lewis 5-2 in their season opener with juniors Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre downing the No. 4 doubles team in Division II 7-6. NIU will hit the road to take on Wisconsin on Sunday.
Miami (1-0): The RedHawks won their season opener against Xavier 4-3 after being down 0-2 early in the match. MU hosts Wright State and Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Buffalo (1-0): The Bull had their way with St. Bonaventure as they won 7-0 in their season opener as three of the matches were decided by forfeit. UB takes on Cornell and UMBC on the road this weekend.
Bowling Green (1-0): The Falcons triumphed 6-1 in their season opener against Youngstown State as five players recorded victories in both singles and doubles. BGSU will make a road trip this weekend as they face off against Duquesne.
Akron (5-0): The Zips extended its winning streak on Saturday as they downed Cleveland State 6-1 as senior Ksenia Berestetska is now 5-0 in singles and junior Olga Shkundina improved her record to 4-0 at both No. 1 singles and doubles. UA hosts UIC, ASA Community College, and Oakland this weekend.
