4 Pete's Sake
Regardless of your allegiances, it's hard not to root for Dan Peters.
Akron's Director of Basketball Operations was honored with a "Purple Out" on Wednesday night, as the Zips toppled Ball State 73-46. The night was meant to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer and show support for Peters who is battling the disease. Although he was unable to attend the game, his family was in attendance to witness Rhodes Arena turn purple as 3000 purple "4PetesSake" t-shirts were distributed.
College programs throughout the nation have gotten behind Peters, who has been given a five percent chance to survive. "College basketball as a whole has done a great job embracing it, which tells you about his reputation and his name," Akron coach Keith Dambrot told Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal following Wednesday's game.
Akron sent purple pins out to 26 different schools and the response was astounding. Ohio State wore the pins Wednesday night against Penn State and had an image on the scoreboard. Bluffton held a "Purple Out" of their own for both basketball teams against Defiance, their rival.
Other schools that joined in supporting Peters were all 13 MAC programs, Arizona, Walsh, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Delta State, Houghton College, Indiana, St. Joseph's College, Western Carolina and Youngstown State. Many of which, Peters held a role as either a coach or an assistant at some point in his career.
Wanted
New Bowling Green coach Dino Babers might want to find a safe house: he's wanted by an Erie, Pa, high school. Apparently a Cathedral Prep School player verbally committed to the Falcons in the summer, only to learn he didn't have a scholarship with the team anymore after the coaching changes.
"Basically, Bowling Green is telling this kid they don't have a spot for him," Cathedral Prep coach Mike Mischler said to The Toledo Blade. "That makes me very angry. I'm not ever letting them or their coaches in this school again while I'm coaching."
Which may be a problem for Bowling Green if it ever wants a player from the school that was the 2012 PIAA Class AAA state champion and made the state semifinals in 2013. The players, Marlon Tyree, was a Class AAA all-state safety and committed to the MAC champs in July. Bowling Green receivers coach Mick Carney was the coach recruiting Tyree. At the moment, but he was not retained when Babers was hired. With the BG offer dried up the senior safety lacks a single FBS scholarship offer just days before National Signing Day.
Game, Set, Match
For those who are crazy about tennis "MACtion," Western Michigan has become the first MAC school to live stream their tennis matches. The Broncos plan to stream both the men's and women's teams, beginning Friday at 1 p.m., when the women take on Indiana. In order to have access to all of the streams, it is required to sign up to be a part of Bronco Insider, where five different packages can be selected.
"We are thrilled at the idea of being the first MAC school to do live streaming," women's tennis coach Betsy Kuhle said to mlive.com. Our student-athletes are excited for their families that can't come to the matches, that they now have the chance to see them play.
