MAC Basketball Week in Review: Sayonara, sweet nonconference

The MAC finished a tidy 86-60 in nonconference play as Toledo picked up their first loss and only three teams have losing records. Teams sorted by win-loss record.

They didn't really have a true chance to win at Lawrence because they couldn't defend Kansas' bigs, but their scoring attack was more impressive than expected and it's fair to call them even more of a favorite to win the MAC. They probably won't reach the NCAA tournament on their own merit, unless they manage to finish the season with three or four losses.

Less than half of Nick Kellogg's points are from 3-pointers. I knew Tommy Freeman and you, sir, are no Tommy Freeman.

Would've have been nice to steal a win at two-loss Princeton, but the Flashes are still well-equipped to post a 20-win season and be a force in the MAC East. Song as old as rhyme.

Eastern Michigan has scored exactly 48 points in their last three Syracuse meetings. They should continue to put them on the schedule until they can exceed that total. Heck, 47 or less is okay too.

Freshman center Isaiah Johnson, who scored 13 total points in the six previous games, led the Zips with 12 points (and was their only double-digit scorer) in the Marshall win. He was also the leading rebounder. Basketball is a weird neat sport sometimes.

You can thank Hercules for making Buffalo-SDSU a forgotten snowy memory. I don't know when they could make this game up, because the MAC schedule is packed with games, but there could be a small window in early March, after South Dakota State's final regular season game. Or it doesn't get played and we are deprived of additional Javon McCrea post moves. Dang.

You're a mean ol' man, Mr. Keno Davis. This is a missive for all teams: fewer of these games, please. I can't take the stats seriously.

I was wondering if Siena Heights plays Marygrove on Wednesday to crown a MAC Fatted Calf champion. And they do — on Wednesday!

Congratulations to the IPFW Mastodons for winning their first game at a MAC stadium. It happened on this game, who endured a week that I think BG fans like me were secretly waiting for and dreading.

That's about as good a week as Miami hoops experienced in a while. They kept up with the Minutemen about as good as that team could. I wouldn't have been too ashamed of a 30-point loss, but it's their lowest margin-of-loss (this side of Wilmington) since the opener at Notre Dame.

Saturday: at Kent State
If they are the weak link of the conference — and they seem to be — then they're not a total pushover like NIU, or Toledo before them. That's a bit of a relief. They'll get a handful of conference wins, maybe even one against a top tier MAC team.

Despite having trouble putting away the RedHawks, UMass finished their MAC portion a flawless 4-0. It's onto the A-10 portion of their schedule, which we'll implicitly understand to be their full MAC membership audition.
