Ohio volleyball head coach Ryan Theis is leaving Athens after six seasons with an overall record of 144-54 (79-17 in MAC play) to take the head coaching position with the Golden Eagles of Marquette, according to Ohio Athletics.
Theis is leaving behind quite the legacy. The two-time MAC Coach of the Year is tied with Geoff Carlson for most career wins in program history, has won the MAC East every season that he coached in Athens, and has coached 23 All-MAC selections.
Bobcat athletic director Jim Schaus released a statement Friday via the @OhioBobcats Twitter account: "Ryan has done a tremendous job during his six seasons. He will be missed. I am very happy for him to be able to go back to his hometown. Over the past decade, we have built a national level program and are committed to its future success. I am confident that we will attract and hire a high caliber coach who will continue to lead us to excellence."
Ohio is coming off a MAC Tournament title and a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013. It is unclear who will be tasked with carrying on that success for the Green and White for the 2014 campaign. As of right now, the 'Cats still have associate head coach Meghan Keck and assistant coach Ryan Walthall on the staff but it remains to be seen whether they will stay at Ohio, join Theis at Marquette, or go elsewhere.
