As we continue our countdown we come across a special teams player who just may be one of the best at his position, Toledo Rockets senior kicker Jeremiah Detmer.
Detmer is as steady as they come when it comes to kicking field goals and extra points. He is not only one of the best in the MAC, but also in the entire nation. He is already on the Lou Groza Watch List (given out to the Nation's best kicker) for this upcoming season. The senior kicker enters his final season with the Toledo Rockets, and they better groom somebody quickly to replace him in the future.
One is the magic number. In fact that is the number of field goals Detmer missed last season as a junior. He was named the MAC Special Team's Player of the Year last year, and is as steady as a rock.
Detmer did not see a lot of work as a freshman, but did give the coaching staff a vote of confidence in his brief appearances. He was successful on 5 of 6 field goal attempts, two of which were from 50+ yards out.
As a sophomore Detmer got off to a slow start missing five field goals in his first 14 attempts. He put any doubts to bed closing out the season a perfect 15 of 15. He finished the season 24 of 29 on field goal attempts and 39 of 42 PAT's. His numbers improved last year as he connected on 19 of 20 field goal attempts and 44 of 45 PAT's.
There isn't a team or coach in college football that would pass on Detmer if given the option. In fact he is currently ranked the third best kicking prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft class.
I don't expect the Rockets to be playing in too many nail-biters this season, but if for some reason they find themselves in a tight spot with only seconds remaining on the clock, they have the best in the business to send out there with the game on the line.
