Coaches Poll: Week 1

The first in-season update of the 2014 Amway Coaches Poll is out, and there's not too much to be surprised at.

Donald Miralle

With the first week of the 2014 college football season officially nailing the BCS' coffin shut, the mainstay college football poll formerly known as the USA Today Coaches Poll no longer has an impact on who will get a chance to play for a national title. That doesn't mean it's gone though.

No, it's merely rebranded itself as the Amway Coaches Poll and now serves a role not dissimilar to the AP Poll, which though widely respected, hasn't factored into the national championship landscape for some time. With the Holiday weekend over, we get our first update of the Coaches Poll this season, and not much has changed.

The MAC still doesn't have a ranked team, which is to be expected this early in the season, but Northern Illinois did receive two votes after stomping Presbyterian 55-3 in the Huskies season opener. One of the MAC's teams also hosts a ranked team this weekend. No. 22 Missouri rolls into Toledo on Saturday at noon for a matchup with the Rockets. UT is coming off a 54-20 win over the No. 4 FCS team in the nation, New Hampshire. Missouri is coming off of a 38-18 win over the No. 12 FCS team in the nation, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. These two teams met in Columbia, Missouri in 2013, with Toledo playing the Tigers relatively close, before falling 38-23.

If Toledo can notch a win this weekend against a ranked SEC team, it's likely we'll see them start receiving some serious early attention in this poll. NIU, the MAC's most common rankings representative as of lately, could also see its vote totals rise rapidly
