Former Akron player Darlington Nagbe could be eligible to play for the U.S. men's national team after taking the U.S. citizenship test on September 10. If he passes, he will immediately be able to play for the USMNT.
Nagbe is originally from Liberia but left before his first birthday and went on to live in multiple European countries throughout his childhood before settling in Lakewood, Ohio at the age of 11. Since he has been in the country for more than five years and he has a green card to live in the U.S. that he acquired in 2012, FIFA mandates that he is eligible to play for the U.S.
He is also married to a U.S. citizen, which cut the wait time for eligibility to three years.
