The eyes of the Mid-American Conference sports fan is deservedly on football, given that fall camps open right around the corner, and before you know it your weekend is going to be consumed with MACtion and pigskin related activities and interests. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t take a pause to appreciate some roundball, as Western Michigan has released their 2016-2017 out of conference slate of opponents.
Per WMU’s release:
2016 Western Michigan Non-Conference Schedule
11/5, Exhibition vs Kalamazoo College
11/11, vs. Marygrove
11/14, @ Oakland
11/17, vs. Villanova @ Gildan Charleston Classic
11/18, vs. Wake Forest or UTEP @ Gildan Charleston Classic
11/20, vs. TBA @ Gildan Charleston Classic
11/26, vs. Central Arkansas
11/30, vs. UNCW
12/7, vs. James Madison
12/10, @ Cleveland State (Quicken Loans Arena)
12/18, @ Washington
12/21, @ UCLA
12/29, vs. Alabama A&M
That’s a heck of a schedule for Western, with the defending national champs, a mid-season trip to the Q, and someone racking up some significant frequent flier mileage on that December west coast swing. So if you’re a Bronco fan who may care about the hardwood than rowing the boat, make your travel plans now.
MAC basketball has been a bit of a hard thing to grasp the last little bit. It seems as though as the football eyeballs and attention increased, the quality and attention of MAC basketball did the opposite. Does it have to be that way? Is one sport being the headline grabber all we can ask for? I’d say upsetting a surely top 10 Villanova in November would go a long way to restoring the roar of MAKsketball. Do your part, Western Michigan.
