Northern Illinois Huskies 9-6 Overall, 1-1 MAC West
Kent State Golden Flashes 9-6 Overall, 1-1 MAC East
NIU will face Kent State at the M.A.C Center in Kent, Ohio on Tuesday night at 7 PM EST. The Golden Flashes get their second home conference game of the 2016-17 season. They were able to kick off MAC play with a 100-90 shoot-out win over Ball State, last Tuesday night. Kent went 31 for 31 from the free throw line setting a new MAC record for free throws that night(previously 25), and came up only 3 free throws shy of the NCAA record. After a nice home win they traveled down to Athens, Ohio to take on a talented Ohio University club on Saturday. The Flashes took an ugly loss at the hand of the Bobcats, falling to 1-1 in the Mac, 85-67. Kent will look to bounce back on Saturday in the friendly confines of their home arena. Kent is playing a high paced brand of basketball in conference play so far, getting their offense 80 possessions in both outings so far.
The Huskies are coming into Tuesday’s game after grabbing their first conference win of the year on Saturday over Central Michigan. Northern Illinois held a 17 point lead during the second half of the game and nearly gave it all back down the stretch. The Huskies would hold on late though, getting to .500 in the MAC at 1-1 with a 87-83 win. The Huskies, who will go on the road to Kent State Tuesday night, are just 1-9 in their last 10 road games in conference play. NIU has won five of their last six coming into Tuesday’s action, including their win over CMU.
The Huskies also traveled to Kent State last season to face the Flashes at M.A.C Center and lost by 1 point, 75-74. Home court advantage has been key so far in the early games of 2016-17 MAC schedule as 10 of the first 12 games played were won by the home team. This is the 53rd meeting between the two schools and Kent State holds a 34-18 advantage over the Huskies all-time.
