Akron Zips at Western Michigan Broncos: Preview, How to Watch, Listen, Stream

What does Vegas know?

NCAA Basketball: Western Michigan at UCLA Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The line in this game is a lot smaller than I expected, with the Akron Zips only favored by 4. Generally, when a team that is 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the MAC, and is playing a team that is 16-3, 6-0, the line is going to be in double digits. What does Vegas know?

Well, Vegas knows how to make money. They don’t care who is going to win, and lines are designed to put even money on both sides. However, that small line indicates is that the bettors like the Western Michigan Broncos.

My guess is there are two reasons. One, they know that when these teams played 2 weeks ago, the score was tied with a minute and change to go. Two, WMU is 2-0 at home in the MAC. Another thing going in the Bronco’s favor is that they are a streaky team, and last time out, they were flat awful shooting the ball. Thomas Wilder, who has been the most consistent Bronco this season was 4-14. The law of averages says they will be hot tonight.

On the other hand, Akron is loaded. They didn’t fluke their way into winning 84% of their games this season. Isaiah Johnson is a monster in the middle, averaging 15.8 points, while connecting on 64% of his shots. Kwan Cheatham Jr. has been coming on as of late. He was averaging 16.4 points per game in MAC play, before a cold shooting night last time out against EMU.

I have no idea what to think of this game. I don’t really see it being a trap game, because of how close it was last time out. On paper, Akron is a much superior team. On the flip side, I expect WMU to shot better at home, like they have all season. Western Michigan has also played up to their competition this season.

I guess I’ll just have to watch and find out.
