2017-18 MAC WBB Recap: Western Michigan Broncos Get Big Win Over New Mexico State

The Western Michigan Broncos got a big win by knocking off the New Mexico State Aggies, 64-55 . The game was the Broncos second out west this season and their first win. The Aggies were an NCAA tournament team last year and had won 17 in a row before losing to Stanford in the first round.

I was only able to catch the second half, as I now cover two conferences, but I wanted to make sure to check out the Broncos without Meredith Shipman. While I was confident the Broncos would be fine with all the talent they have returning, you just can’t really account for the loss of a player of that caliber.

Things were tight in the third quarter and at one point it felt like the game was going to slip away from the Broncos. Down the stretch, however, the Broncos were too much for the Aggies in the paint. Breanna Mobley and Marley Hill each had a double double and combined for 32 points and 24 rebounds. The Broncos were awful shooting the ball, but considering it was their second game in 3 days and they are on a west coast swing, that doesn’t concern me at all.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Broncos, as they head to Chicago to take on Loyola on the 15th and then to Iowa on the 19th. After that, they head down to the sunshine state to participate in the Florida Gulf Coast Showcase. All of this should provide valuable experience as they try to compete in a loaded MAC West.
