Miami Knocks off Northern Illinois in Close Contest

The RedHawks keep rolling under new coach Duffy.

The Miami RedHawks continue to motor along under new head coach Megan Duffy, as they won their 6th straight game on the season, this time against conference foe Northern Illinois. Both teams were 8-3 on the season coming into the game.

It was a close contest throughout, with the score tied at 65 with 7.6 seconds to go, thanks to a huge three by the Huskies’ Courtney Woods. Lauren Dickerson then got to the line and knocked down the free throws to clinch the win for the RedHawks.

The Huskies came into the game averaging 83.2 points per game, but Miami used aggressive defense to hold them well below their average. Neither team shot the ball particularly well from the floor or the free throw line. Northern Illinois out rebounded the RedHawks 49-41, but Miami was able to gain an advantage by only committing 6 turnovers compared to 14 for the Huskies. 10 of those were the result of a Miami steal.

4 different RedHawks scored in double figures, led by Dickerson’s 18. Kelly Smith led the Huskies with 21 points on 8-14 shooting, and grabbed 9 rebounds. Ally May added 16 points on 7-11 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Northern Illinois Huskies play host to the Kent State Golden Flashes on January 3rd, while the Miami RedHawks head to Muncie to take on the Ball State Cardinals.
