Kent State Golden Flashes at Toledo Rockets: Preview, How To Watch, Listen, Stream

Toledo looks to avenge prior loss to the Flashes, while Kent State looks for season sweep

NCAA Basketball: Las Vegas Classic-Southern Methodist vs Kent State Joshua Dahl-USA TODAY Sports

Kent State is coming off of a heartbreaking loss at home against Bowling Green, 84-83, in overtime. The Flashes hosted Toledo back on January 21st and beat them handily in what was one of their best all-around games of the year. The win started a string of 4 wins in 5 games before losing to the Falcons on Tuesday. Kent State will look to get back on track with another good performance against Toledo.

Toledo picked up a nice home win on Tuesday against Eastern Michigan, 73-57. They will look to avenge their loss the Flashes earlier this season when they lost 85-61. It was the only time Toledo has been held under 70 points all season. The Rockets are 9-2 at home on the season.

Scouting Kent State

Kent State is 13-11 overall and 5-6 in MAC play.

The Flashes lead the MAC with a plus 7.7 rebounding margin and 16.5 offensive rebounds per game. They have very good rebounding guards and they will send four guys to the offensive glass.

Kent State can put up a lot of points when they move the ball and don’t commit a high number of turnovers. In the half court they will run their offensive through their post players, working inside-out.

Scouting Toledo

Toledo is 12-12 overall and 5-6 in MAC play.

Toledo ranks second in the MAC with 81.5 ppg and is first with a 48.4 FG%. In Conference play, they lead the MAC shooting 49.4% from the field and dishing out 17.5 assists per game.

They can get their scoring from the perimeter or from in the paint. They can beat teams with a balanced scoring attack like they did on Tuesday against Eastern Michigan when five different Rockets dropped in double figures.

Players To Watch

Jimmy Hall, Kent State’s senior big man ranks 2nd in the MAC with 10.8 rebounds per game and 5th with 18.8 points per game. Hall is often double teamed and their success often rests on his ability to find the open man when passing out of the pressure.

Deon Edwin, has come on strong in his senior season and is playing like the teams second best player. He is tremendously athletic and can knock down the triple as well. He is averaging 13 point per game for the Flashes.

Jonathon Williams, senior guard for the Rockets is second in the MAC with 20.3 points per game. They will need his scoring on Saturday.

Steve Taylor Jr , was named MAC West Player of the week for the second time this year. He is as complete a player as you will see in the MAC. He has 17 double-doubles, which is good for 3rd in the nation.

Prediction

Toledo has played their best basketball at home, while Kent State has been at their best on the road. Something has to give here. I see Kent State coming out with a sense of purpose after a disappointing loss on Tuesday. I have the Flashes taking this one 85-76 to complete the season sweep over the Rockets.
