The magic number is 13. Win that many games, and you get a bye for the MAC tournament. Ball State and Central Michigan are already there. Northern Illinois just needs to win one of their last 2. If Kent can extend their winning streak to 7, they are there, and it’s simple. If that doesn’t happen, Kent is still in the drivers seat. Toledo and Ohio are the only other teams that can reach twelve wins. Kent holds the tie-breakers over both of them.
#12 Eastern Michigan Eagles
The Eagles have had a disappointing season. They have one of the youngest teams in the country, so they should be better next season.
#11 Akron Zips
Their upset win at Northern Illinois seems like a long, long time ago.
#10 Miami RedHawks
Another young team that is looking toward the future.
#9 Bowling Green Falcons
After a slow start, the Falcons have won two of their last three.
#8 Western Michigan Broncos
The Broncos have had a brutal schedule, and most of their losses have been close. It doesn’t get any easier, they close out their season with Central Michigan and Northern Illinois.
#7 Buffalo Bulls
Another young team, the Bulls might be the favorites to win the conference next season.
#5 (tie) Toledo Rockets
The Rockets are in must win mode to get the bye for the tournament. They close out the season with Northern Illinois and then Ball State, making it a daunting task.
#5 (tie) Ohio Bobcats
The Bobcats need to win out, and hope that Kent drops their next two for a shot at the bye. Since they lost both to Kent earlier in the season, tying them isn’t good enough.
#4 Kent State Golden Flashes
Winners of 5 straight, the Golden Flashes have put themselves in a prime spot for not having to play in the first round on Monday.
#3 Northern Illinois Huskies
One of the deepest teams in the MAC, they Huskies are poised to make a run in the MAC tournament.
#2 Central Michigan Chippewas
It’s rough at the top of the MAC. A loss against Ball State in Muncie was enough to knock the Chippewas off the top spot for most of the voters. They have been impressive enough this year that some still had them number 1.
#1 Ball State Cardinals
Hustle Belt’s new number one, the Ball State Cardinals. If they manage to win out, and so do the Chippewas, the number 1 seed will be determined by the two team’s records against the next highest seed. Currently that is Northern Illinois, and CMU is 2-0 while BSU is 1-1.
Original story edited because the number 1 seed will not, in fact, be decided by a coin flip.
