Eastern Michigan Announces New Athletic Director

Meet the new boss, not the same as the old boss.

Eastern Michigan President James M. Smith announces Eastern Michigan’s 14th Athletic Director Scott Wetherbee
Kenneth Bailey

Eastern Michigan President James M. Smith announced today that Eastern Michigan’s 14th Athletic Director would be Scott Wetherbee. Mr. Wetherbee, 41, comes to Eastern Michigan from Mississippi State University where he was serving as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Deputy Director of Athletics. He is a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan but he played baseball for Ball State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Administration.

He started as a Ticket Office Intern at Western Michigan in 1997 and has had stints at Ball State, Fresno State, San Diego State and East Carolina. He comes in as a highly regarded up and coming Athletic Director.

I think he comes at a critical juncture for Eastern Michigan Athletics. Eastern Michigan just announced its plans to improve its athletic facilities. The football team is coming off its first bowl visit in 29 years. The men’s basketball team is on the cusp of something big. The other sports continue to excel in their respective fields. It is my hope that he stays here long enough to guide Eastern Michigan athletics through the next few years.

I wish him the best of luck in his tenure at Eastern Michigan.
