Ball State Running Back James Gilbert Named to the Maxwell Watch List

The junior is expected to do great things in 2017

James Gilbert, the junior running back for the Ball State Cardinals was named to the Maxwell Award watch list. The Award has been given annually since 1937 to the nation’s best football player. Toledo’s Logan Woodside was the only other MAC player to make the watch list this season.

Gilbert had a fantastic sophomore year in 2016, rushing for 1332 yards and 12 touchdowns. The yardage total was the 4th highest in Ball State history. For his work on the field, he was awarded the team’s MVP, known as the John Magnabosco Award. He was also named to the first team All-MAC squad.

In 2015, as a freshman, Gilbert rushed for 608 yards and 8 touchdowns.

At Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis, Gilbert was named the 2014 Indiana Public Schools Player of the Year. He amassed 4817 rushing yards for his career, an Arsenal Tech record.

The Maxwell Award schedule goes as follows. On October 30th, they will announce the semi-finalists. The finalists will be named on November 20th, with the finalist getting the award on December 7th.
